Prohibition of alcoholic beverages has a long and contested history in the United States. Advocates of federal prohibition in the early 20th century ranged from pietistic Protestants to social reformers, who believed that prohibition could reduce poverty and crime. However, prohibition proved difficult to enforce and an estimated 10,000 speakeasies in New York City alone sold alcoholic beverages. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Cullen-Harrison Act in 1933, prohibition ended and the nation rejoiced.

RALEIGH, NC- Saturday June 8, 2013 Hundreds of NC natives attended the celebration of Our State magazines 80th Anniversary in Downtown Raleigh at the North Carolina Museum of History. Their website dubs this annual affair the museum’s largest event in June. The Our State event is part of the 2nd Saturdays series developed by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. The series is an effort to provide affordable fun, learning experiences, food, and cultural appreciation for families that are “on the look out for things to do that don’t break their budget.” The first issue of Our State magazine debuted on June 3, 1933. According to NC History Today, “the magazine was an instant success despite the tough economic times.” To commemorate Our State’s beginnings, the NC Museum of History opened their doors free of charge for four hours to provide several family festivities for locals including arts and crafts, history lessons, live music, museum tours, food, and a chance to view previous editions of the magazine. Some of this year’s popular attractions included Our State featured cakes from Wendy Perry, a civil war display from award winning history teacher Eric Marshall, live performances by Kickin’ Grass bluegrass band, and artist Hal Pugh’s earthenware pottery.
