Under the name, Trans-Computational Membranes, the Architectural Association Visiting School Madrid challenges the conception of flexibility within the context of spatial re-adaptation. During the 2013 School, new computational methods were utilised to rethink membrane structures from the micro to macro, resulting in a plethora of habitable prototypes. Students were involved in a continuous dialogue between analog and digital experimentation, where material processes and fabrication techniques are incorporated within a digital working methodology, analysing material behaviour from nano-scale patterns to the production of physical 1-to-1 scale prototypes. Generative design workshops took place throughout the programme, aiming at digital fabrication of textile structures though the use of physical simulations. Parallel to their research development, students collaborated in the fabrication of a full scale membrane-based pavilion which investigated reconfiguration as a response to rapid fluctuations to todays specific needs. A lecture series was developed in parallel to the studio-based research. Renowned speakers addressed topics relating to dynamic architectural models, adaptive systems and patterning experimentation for spatial deployment. The event was developed in coordination with Universidad Europea and was hosted in the Official College of Architects (COAM) which sponsored the programme together with Actíu, Philips, Volumaniac and the British Embassy Madrid. AAVS Summer 2013, Ottawa, Canada A 3D scan of Group 03's final projected installation at the Azrieli School of Architecture, Carleton Based on 3D scan data and personal experiences of a ruin in the hinterlands of Canada, “Distant Images and Tiny Worlds” takes the willing participant on a virtual journey. The “Carbide Wilson” estate was built upon the fallacy of reigning in nature for human endeavor. The exposure to the powerful forces of the environment ultimately decayed and over-grew the structure, returning its energies to the flow; its intervention in the space revealed as a small speck in a larger picture. The viewer is taken blindly along the tenuous thread that connects the multiple virtual realities depicting this story. The result is an abstract experience, animating the narrative of a traversal from one point in space and time to another. Julien Nolin Thao Lan Nguyen Le Alexander Stewart

AAVS Summer 2013, Ottawa, Canada A 3D scan of Group 02's final projected installation at the Azrieli School of Architecture, Carleton This project began with an examination of the qualities of 3D scanned landscapes. Certain features that are normally considered limitations of the scanner became the focus of further explorations. Blind spots and scan shadows are gaps without information, and act as framing devices for the clouds that are layered in the space behind. The detachment from gravity and transparency of material are enhanced through the media of animation and projection in order to deliberately disorient the viewer. Ultimately, the distortion of projection images due to the irregular surfaces of the projection site manipulates real space and merges perceptions. Andrej Iwanski Sergej Maier Aisha Sawatsky
