          • Lifesaving Fix for Aortic Aneurysm

When his head hit the pillow one night last October, Dennis Oben never considered it might be his last. Until he got a rude awakening. “The middle of the night when I got a stabbing pain in my back and we called the EMTs, I knew something was terribly wrong,” says Dennis Oben. At the hospital they quickly determined Dennis had a triple ‘A’ - abdominal aortic aneurysm - which is a ballooning of the artery that supplies the abdomen, pelvis and legs. Without warning: it burst. “It is the main vessel that comes out of the heart. If it ruptures, it is a matter of seconds before you bleed out and die,” says Dr. Russell Becker, who is a vascular surgeon with Lee Memorial Health System. “They short-cutted me as fast as possible into surgery because I was bleeding out,” says Oben. One of the most fatal emergencies, overall only 10% of patients survives a ruptured aortic aneurysm. So his surgeon employed a fast fix; instead of opening the chest, he fed a catheter through an artery in the leg and deployed a lifesaving stent. “The stent is made to mimic or replicate our natural anatomy, so you have to cover all the areas of the aneurysm. What we are doing is basically relining their vessels with a graft,” says Oben. Unlike a tiny heart stent, this is a large stent made of Gortex which fixes the artery from the inside out. The location of Dennis’ rupture worked in his favor. “In his case he had a contained rupture which gave us that stable period of a couple hours to get our devices in and fix him,” says Dr. Becker. “Generally speaking you don’t survive what happened to me. I think this less invasive procedure was a very big factor in my survival,” says Oben. Once patched, Dennis was on the mend: out of the hospital in days and back to work in weeks. Only now he has permanent reinforcement. For nearly two decades endovascular technology has been used to treat Abdominal Aneurysms. The technology has become easier to use and make it able to treat more complicated cases. One such graft is the Trivascular Ovation Stent Graft. The Trivascular Ovation Stent Graft is one of the lowest profile stent grafts currently on the market making it easier to treat patients with smaller arteries, shorter aneurysmal necks or aneurysms that are closer to the renal arteries. Since its approval the doctors at the Arizona Heart Institute and Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital have treated over 55 cases with this device with excellent results. http://www.AbrazoHealth.com http://www.azheart.com
