Realtime sound visualisation made with custom software "Partitura" Sound by Telefon Tel Aviv a collaboration between Abstract Birds and Quayola Partitura is a custom software built in www.vvvv.org to generate realtime graphics aimed at visualising sound. The term “Partitura” (score) implies a connection with music, and this metaphor is the main focus of the project. Partitura aims to create a new system for translating sound into visual forms. Inspired by the studies of artists such as Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Oscar Fischinger and Norman McLaren, the images generated by Partitura are based on a precise and coherent system of relationships between various types of geometries. The main characteristic of this system is its horizontal linear structure, like that of a musical score. It is along this linear environment that the different classes of abstract elements are created and evolve over time according to the sound. Partitura creates endless ever-evolving abstract landscapes that can respond to musical structures, audio analysis and manual gestural inputs. It is an instrument that visualises sound with both the freedom of spontaneous personal interpretation/improvisation and at the same time maintaining the automations and triggers of mathematical precision. Partitura defines a coherent language of its own for the creation of new contemporary abstractions. It is within this system that Partitura creates worlds that expand from a single dot to multiple galaxies, from minimalism to complexity, from rigid to elastic, from solid to liquid, from angular to smoothness, from tentative to boldness, from calm to agitation, from slow to fast, from desaturated to saturation, from dark to lightness, from predictable to unpredictability. Literally ‘everything’ and its opposite... just like a musical flow. - www.abstractbirds.com www.quayola.com

A live audiovisual concert in two parts, realized in collaboration with Arcadi, IRCAM, Ensemble Intercontemporain and Dmitri Kourliandski. We created a realtime sound-reactive software to visualize the two pieces composed by Dmitri Kourliandski and performed by the Ensemble Intercontemporain. IRCAM used 24 microphones to get a separated audio signal from each instrument of the ensemble. Thomas Goepfer created a software which analyzes each signal and extract the sound information; the resulting data are sent to our software and used to animate the elements of the visual composition. We interact in realtime controlling several parameters of the visuals and directing the camera movements. We emphasized the strong dynamic and timbric contrast between the two musical compositions by finding different kinetic and material properties for the two visual counterparts. The monolithic structure of the pieces lends itself to an architectural / sculptural representation, in which the elements are animated and recombined changing the general order but still maintaining the global identity of the work. The observer is forced / led to change the point of view, explore the object discovering its different aspects and find out that in breaking the perceptual scheme lies the possibility of a new vision. http://www.abstractbirds.com/les-objets-impossibles/

Genesi is a live audiovisual show. Both the music and the visuals are generated in realtime using the input of two electric instruments (a wind instrument and a piano). Genesi tells the life of an abstract organism from birth, through its various stages of development, until its death. The thematic of the show is life as ordering principle in its many manifestations. The journey of this life allows the reminiscence of archetypal symbols that affect us as living beings. http://www.abstractbirds.com/genesi/ Some stills at http://www.flickr.com/photos/abstractbirds/sets/72157624962280404/ --- the first part of this capture is not smooth (probably beacuse of the compression), but it runs at 60fps in realtime!

“Celeste Motus” is an audiovisual suite in three movements. This video shows some excerpts from the suite, captured in realtime during a studio session (because of the capturing process there are some drops in the framerate, but the realtime version runs at 60 frames per second). Both the music and the visuals are generated in realtime using the input of two electric instruments (a wind instrument and a piano). The original setup is meant to be a three screens span mode resulting in a panoramic 4:1 view. The theme of the suite is the growth of consciousness, a growth that develops during the three movements.
