The purpose of this case study is to investigate the role of social media in mobilizing social movements, garnering social change, raising awareness, and furthering campaigns and to explore its paradoxical nature in accomplishing those goals. My research analyzed current research endeavors relating to the theories of social movements as applied to that of the Arab Spring revolutions, often coined as the "social media revolutions," an event that inspired this research topic, as well as theories of the phenomenon of “slactivism.” My research culminated in a creative project component, which is this video. This documentary is a collection of opinions from current activists and agents of social change here at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The interviews served as means to gain valuable insight from them in regards to the effectiveness of social media in accomplishing their missions. The research was broken down into 3 Case Studies: (1) The Arab Spring and the role of social media in mobilizing the movement, (2) The phenomenon of “slactivism” as exacerbated by social media, and (3) A collection of interviews with UNC-CH student activists and agents of social change here on campus where the interviewer inquires of the interviewee how and if social media is effective or ineffective in their efforts to achieving their goals, making a positive impact, and bringing about change. You are about to watch what comprises part 3, the third and final component of my research. In these interviews, I, the interviewer inquires of the interviewees how and if social media is effective or ineffective in their efforts. Ultimately, the interviews revealed what the research in the literature review unveiled: social media is in fact paradoxical in its effects and capabilities. However, many of the students found social media to be effective for their causes and an important asset to accomplishing their particular missions. While many of them acknowledged that perhaps some students would fall victim to the trap of “slactivism” and merely share a campaign on social media rather than actively participate in it, for the most part, the interviewees felt the sharing of their campaign was still impactful, even if by a “slactivist.” Social media was an integral component to their success.

In the spring of 2015, Oberlin College announced its intention to increase tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year by almost $2,500. This hike fits within a pattern of increases which has seen Oberlin's tuition grow by over $15,000 in the last nine years! Oberlin students have again come together under the banner of financial accessibility to speak out against the tuition hike as well as other inaccessibility issues on this campus, such as workers' rights, anti-Blackness, and oppression of Oberlin community members.
