KALAHARI RESORTS & CONVENTIONS | Client JACOBSON/ROST | Agency TOM GORTON | Creative Director MARTIN RODAHL | Director ANDY RAMSEY | Editor CHRIS LECLERC | Camera MARK VAN WIJK | Camera Kalahari Resorts wanted to show their visitors that their waterparks & convention centers are not just African-themed, they're truly inspired by African art and culture. Jacobson Rost sent a team of filmmakers to Africa as the family traveled the continent and experienced Africa firsthand. Working with several hundred hours of footage (shot by Chicago director Martin Rodahl, Milwaukee-based DP Chris LeClerc and South African cameraman Mark van Wijk), we assembled six stories showcasing the beauty and energy of Africa and its people. Kalahari was adamant that this not be series of straight sell-pieces which allowed us to let the images, the people and the experiences speak for themselves.

In December, Nana Danso Abiam was killed in a car accident in Accra, Ghana. In 1998, Nana founded the Pan Africa Orchestra in Accra, Ghana fulfilling his dream to conduct an Afro-centric orchestra solely with traditional African instruments. The first album, Opus 1, was released in 1995 by Realworld Records and went to the top of the New World Music Charts for six weeks. The orchestra's repertoire included Nana's own compositions and his arrangements of traditional songs, as well as highlife, Afro-rock and Fela-Kuti' s Afro-beat. In 2003 the PAO collaborated with the master Kora player and composer, Tunde Jegede in a concert in Accra. At the time of his passing “Nana Dee” was in the process of establishing an international conservatory of African music. “Accra” is part of a project I started with Nana Dee I’m 2003, featuring the music of the Pan African Orchestra.

Babacar Mbengue is from Dakar in Senegal, Africa. I met Babacar through his student Scott Futrell. Scott said I should record Babacar, I agreed to listen. I was amazed by the way Babacar played. I asked, is that 6/8 or 4/4? to which Babacar laughed and said: “In Africa there is no 4 or 6, its all the same” Which mean’s to me, you can play multiple time signatures within the same song!
