A critical part of Paris Photo Los Angeles was the educational component, organized by independent curator Douglas Fogle, and titled Sound and Vision. This program offered our visitors multiple intellectual perspectives on the use of images – both moving and still – in contemporary culture. Bringing together two artists at a time in the Sherry Lansing Theater on the Paramount Studios lot, the Conversations could open a free wheeling discussion of the practice of image making whether it be in the realm of the expanded uses of the photographic image or in the world of film and video. Each conversation was introduced by an international curator or critic who opened the talk with a conceptual meditation on the relationship between still and moving images in the history of art and cinema. Man who had given up a academic career in physics to spend the last 12 years pursuing a life walking America's highways carrying only basic necessities. I first met Jerrold earlier that day walking along Route 518 south of the town of Mora New Mexico. I pulled over despite him not hitchhiking and wound up giving him a ride down to a truck stop on the I-40 outside Santa Ana. From there he was headed further south and I was going east. Before we parted ways he spent about an hour sharing his story on camera. This is a short sampling of that story. In the many years of roaming this country I've have never meet anyone quite like him. A true spirit of the road! Filmed by Nicholas Syracuse http://www.roadphoto.com Edited by Sam Roden http://www.rodantibrosfilms.com/RodantiBrosFilms/Reel.html
