Desert Wanderers by Tim Bonython This year has been full of swells bombarding the southern flank of Australia with already three trips to Tasmania to Shipsterns Bluff & two to WA. It was only a matter of time before I did a journey to my homeland of South OZ. Back in 1989 I did a trip to the Eyre Peninsula with surfer Chris Homer for my definitive film Gripping Stuff. Last year I ventured back starting with the Fantastic Noodles Junior event & realized that there was some truly some amazing world-class waves there. They can be big & mean but the rewards can be all time. The only thing you need to deal with is they are hard to find & come with scary feelings that are real. BIG SHARKS. This time around I had local Jeff Schmucker call me to let me know there was a good week of waves & that a trip down would be worth my while. All sorts of surfers were heading across & so all I had to do was get myself there. Day one I meet up Matt Hoy, Craig Anderson & host Josiah & Jeff Schmucker & we get in late surf at a right-hander that has a sucky take off but then a nice barrel on each wave. The sunset was all time. Day 2 we were up at 4.30am to get to a spot at first light – it was icy cold & foggy but at the same time amazing. On our arrival it was hard to see the ocean as the fog was like a white creamy blanket was pouring off the coastline into the ocean (Hoyo called a fog fall) but through the haze of it we could see perfect lines with spitting tubes BUT was not consistent or big enough for us to start our day there. So back into our cars Jeff decided to check out another spot back up the coast where we had to ask the local farmer permission to allow us in, which he did. On arrival the waves were perfect peaky, off shore 4 to 6 foot, & as always no one out except a pack of dolphins that were cruising up & down the beach. The boys suited up & were out there in no time. Jeff put his ski in via the beach & raced up and down the coast looking at all the options. Hoyo & Josiah got out there & made the most of it with the locals that were dropping into most of the rides darting around underneath as they ripped up the surface. By lunch we gathered out stuff up & heading back to town to surf the bombie. Boats loaded & Jeff’s ski put out we had the bombie to ourselves in 6 to 10 foot waves in light onshore wind. It wasn’t epic but it was nice to be back there. The next morning with another early start we headed back to the right point break where we were greeted with perfect tubing 4 to 6 foot slabs. Marti Paradisis & Californian Alex Gray was out there as was Justin ‘Jughead’ Alport. They were getting shacked off there heads. Matt Hoy paddled out and straight off the bat dropped into the green room coming out with the boys hooting then & on each pit. The day ended with all stoked to see it ended on such a good note. We headed to the pub and connected the camera and watched the day’s action. Bags packed we all heading home.

This had to be one of the most entertaining shoots in the whole FuelTv "Good Advice" series. Alex Gray is not only a comedian but an amazing human being. Living a carefree life he surfs, mentors the youth and continues to inspire those he is around. Today Alex continues to push himself as a surfer riding slabs and wave heights larger then LA's average building height. If you are on the 101 you might see him towing his jet ski heading to those remote spots. Alex you rule!
