"Marching Through Georgia" is a marching song written by Henry Clay Work at the end of the American Civil War in 1865. The title and lyrics of the song refer to U.S. Army major general William T. Sherman's "March to the Sea" to capture the Confederate city of Savannah, Georgia, in late 1864. It was the first "slash and burn" military campaign in modern history, an attack, not on the armies of the enemy, but on its infrastructure. Sherman's forces destroyed railroads, crops, plantations, and so on. They also freed the slaves as they went. Many enthusiastic ex-slaves then joined them and helped the army with its campaign. When questioned by a Confederate lady about the morality of such a campaign, Sherman is said to have replied that he would do whatever is necessary to bring the American Civil War to a close.
