The Vietnam War challenged Californians on social, cultural, and political levels. Vietnam veterans were challenged by the pain of that war, and by a democracy in deep conflict about it. In Santa Rosa, a group of veterans came together to respond with compassion and to give veterans a voice. Their organization is one of the earliest frontrunners in the veterans’ movement. They named it Flower of the Dragon, inspired by Vietnamese mythology. These veterans, and their family and friends, have come back together to reflect on their uniquely individual, yet powerfully connected experiences. Their stories inform us on how a small group of people can focus on an important issue and change themselves, their community, and society. Flower of the Dragon became a model for veterans’ organizations throughout the country and is known today as Vietnam Veterans of California, serving tens of thousands of veterans from all wars. This interview is with Lonny Weissman, a founding member of The Dragon, who served as a medic in '68 and '69, and assisted in the Orphans' Airlift during the fall of Saigon in '75.

Jimmy Carter saw himself as the antithesis to Nixon - he wanted to be the president who would restore morality to American life. An outsider in Washington, he sought to base his policies on human rights rather than on they brute facts of power politics. Yet his presidency saw the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the revolution in Iran. Heavily defeated by Ronald Reagan in 1980, will the Carter presidency go down in history as a failed presidency? Kennedy's brief Presidency, terminated by assassination, still has glamour attached to it, over 40 years after his death. Yet, his actual performance in office divides the historians. Some claim that he was continually learning from experience. They argue that if he had lived and been returned for a second term, he would have introduced radical reforms in civil rights, and would have withdrawn from the United States' commitment in Vietnam. Others argue that his foreign policy would not have been so very different from that of his successor, and that he would have had less success in persuading Congress to pass civil rights legislation. What should the final verdict be?
