More than 50 participants participated in the workshop in which Andrew Bird explained nuances of editing and sound editing showing shots of his films like Juno, The Edge of Heaven, Soul Kitchen and many more. “I am not inspired by any film maker when it comes to editing” was the statement of the day from Andrew Bird. “When I watch a film, I do not look at the style of editing I rather enjoy the movie” he added. The participants of the workshop shared their experiences about the medium of sound in cinema. Bird pointed out important cinemas of Germany that is remembered for sound. “To enhance film, sound is used” he said. He also spoke about the need of the noise background sound in cinemas. According to him, some selected noise makes the scene interesting. Andrew Bird gave valuable insights about the films he worked in. On 'The Edge of Heaven', a film that he edited, he said, ”The film was made on the editor's table rather than the scriptwriter's notebook.” He said that even if he had a good relation with the director, Faith Akin, he did not visit the sets of Edge of Heaven. “I would look at the finished footage instead of visiting the sets”. As a British born film editor working in Germany, he has made films in different languages. He however, does not prefer dubbing. He has never had a problem with any films of other languages. “I would rather read subtitles of foreign films rather than watch the dubbed version with bad-sync. Dubbing absolutely kills the film.”

Andrew Bird's new album, Echolocations, was recorded entirely in canyons in Utah. When I heard this song, I felt it needed to be danced to. Thanks to Ariella Yendler & Angela Luu for improvising blues fusion to this on a beach in Goleta, California.
