An early morning flight from KAVQ in Marana to KPAN at Payson. Departing from Runway 12, we make a left turn along Avra Valley Rd and the Central Arizona Project Canal towards the Tortolita and more distant Catalina Mts. Then we turn left again on a northerly course and pass over the Santa Cruz River. Picacho and Newman Peaks are in the distance. We cross I-10, then pass just west of the Twin Hawks airstrip. Continuing northward, we pass to the right of Desert Peak and over the Coronado Wash. We pass over the Gila River near Cochran and continue on to Picketpost Mt just southwest of Superior, where we turn slightly towards the northwest. On this heading we pass over the Tonto National Forest and the Superstition Mts. We pass over Apache Lake with Roosevelt Lake and Roosevelt Dam to the east and Horse Mesa Dam to the west. We continue along the northwestern edge of Roosevelt Lake with Four Peaks Mt to the left. We fly up Tonto Creek inside of the Tonto Basin near the towns of Punkin Creek and then Jake's Corner. Rye Creek joins Tonto Creek from the northwest and we fly between the two towns of Rye and Gisela. We then follow highway 89 into Payson. At the Payson Airport we turn downwind for Runway 24. The East Verde River and the Mogollon Rim is on our left. We continue the right hand pattern into 24 and land, taxing almost the entire length of 24 to the refueling area.

            • QX 1

from David Gilchrist - 4G Productions Added

This is the story of Rosie and her late husband John Archer. They loved, lived and worked near the tiny town of Winton in the Australian Outback. The sometimes irascible, often enigmatic John Archer, also known as QX 1, was the first man to enlist in WW2 from Queensland. John joined the 2nd Australian Imperial Force on the first day of recruiting in Brisbane on October 20, 1939, and was one of 60 recruits who marched from the old drill hall in Water St. Fortitude Valley, to Brunswick Street station on that day, to take a train to Redbank to begin life as a soldier at war. John grew up at Wanora Downs, a vast 16,000ha property. He suffered rickets as a child and life was tough, but one of his fondest memories was the arrival of the mail man, Mr. McPherson of Dagworth Station and Waltzing Matilda fame. McPherson had gone broke in the Depression but always had a story for young John. John served in the army seeing combat in Egypt, Syria, Greece, and was at the fall of Crete. Fighting the Japanese in New Guinea saw his courage and leadership rewarded by promotion to sergeant (at least 20 times) - but folklore has it that he would pin the stripes on rather than sew them, as discipline was out the door once he left the combat zone. John married Rosie in 1950. They had six children. During the good years, John acquired the neighbouring properties of Donald Downs and New Farm, adding 14,000ha to his holdings while Rosie bought a half share in the Central Hotel, Winton, as "big John" had a thirst. He helped her buy another property, Lillyvale. But the 1960s, the wool industry struggled. Instead of move off the land John became a truckie owning a stock route, a mail run and carted the local fuel and wool loading until things picked up. In 2000, he and Rosie moved to a 404ha farm in Winton. His optimistic outlook on life during the ups and downs was reflected in his attitude - "being broke wasn't that bad, it was the getting there that caused the pain". John died in 2007. Rosie still lives on a small farm near her beloved Winton. This is their story - a life in the Queensland Channel Country where the dusty Diamantina River sometimes runs.

June 21, 2015 According Psalm 127:3-5, children are like arrows, and fathers are like archers. When dads learn to shoot straight, the kids are going to hit the mark. An arrow is no more effective than the warrior who shoots it. The bow is no more effective than the man who holds it in his hand. This message was taught by Senior Pastor Brandon Park on a Sunday morning at First Baptist Raytown. Find more messages and more information at FirstBaptistRaytown.com.
