Video documentation of Dataflags at the Guest Projects, as part of the Executive Chair show, curated by Ozden Sahin, featuring Haydn Jones, Jonathan Munro and myself. Dataflags. 2014 Screenprint on somerset paper, data from the last ten years of Lehman Brothers' financial trading, electric paint, soundsystem, custom code, voice soprano (Madge). When the surface of the artwork is touched, a soprano sings the share price of Lehman Brothers, starting from September 1998, until September 2008, when the company that was thought 'too big to fail', declared bankruptcy. The artwork is an ironic take on one of the tragedies of our times.

"Change is afoot. I’m excited to have embarked upon a new way of working, to have discovered new tools with which I can dig deeper. New formats, which both inform and support my studio work. This is the second part of a mini-doc, created about my time as Artist in Residence at Joya: Arte + Ecología. My aim for my overall time at Cortijada Los Gázquez (in Sierra Maria Los Vélez Natural Park, Andalucía) was to take a step away form my previous studio practice, and to learn new skills: new methods of artistic investigation and research. This has been a two part residency – during the first, I spent time sketching, note-making, planning. During this second part, I’ve embarked upon a series of projects – mostly outdoors – which discuss this arid terrain. It’s the lack of precipitation, the lack of rainfall here, in this region that interests me the most – and that all along I’ve felt the need to respond to through my work. Rain, or lack of rain is the dominant factor here – that shapes and affects almost every aspect of daily life. My artwork is becoming increasingly interested in people – in ‘lifetimes’, in past lives. Much of my work here has been about gathering: gathering evidence, traces, proof of past lives - of people, of places. Interviewing locals, or creating scenes which explain how this land might once have been. Documenting abandonment, or documenting moments of day to day life here. The ideal outcome of my time here would be to have created a body of work, a series of versatile pieces that describe the life of this landscape: and in so doing, teach myself new skills. Most importantly though, is that this new work is inclusive – it’s a step away from autobiographical painting. And so perhaps, here is a new kind of purpose for my work – I hope for these to be pieces that discuss themes and address topics outside of my own life, that describe a bigger picture." David Cass
