“Down that main hall is like the US 41 of the radiology area. We have a CT area, we have nuclear medicine and we have diagnostics,” says Jessica Lindsey, radiology director with Lee Memorial Health System. A high traffic hallway on the second floor of HealthPark Medical Center has undergone a therapeutic design, one that’s quite literally over the top - a series of hand-painted ceiling tiles. “We have a really technically driven department working with radiology. It can kind feel like a cold space and we really want to warm it up a little bit,” says Lindsey. A growing body of research shows decorating hospitals with artwork can change the emotional perspective. “Art is a healing force, it’s been proven- clinically proven, that art and music calms the patient, distracts them from their pain. So art is a very important part of everyday life, but in particular in a health care system,” says Doug MacGregor, arts in the health care coordinator with Lee Memorial Health System. The hallway is a launching pad of sorts for patients. They wait there until it is time for their procedure. Laying on a gurney, it’s only natural to look up. “It’s a transition space because the turnaround times are so fast. Our CT scans can be as quick as two minutes. And we’ll be ready to bring that next patient in. I would say that probably anecdotally at least 95% of the patients that come through that hallway mention something,” says Lindsey. David Bergman among them. “Use your imagination and you can see water going through the different sea plants. And as they flow through the water it’s very relaxing for the soul,” says Bergman. Tranquil landscapes, soothing colors and familiar objects lower stress. “It relaxes you especially if you’re having a test you’ve never had before,” says Bergman. Just what the doctor ordered. Artist Jefre Manuel was selected by the Washington DC Metro to create a defining artwork for the Farragut North station. Jefre selected Sensitile's Jali Cascata material with a Zari Dusk dichroic for its dynamic qualities to represent water in his wall mounted artwork titled "Pulse". Installed with exterior grade stainless steel hardware and stand-offs, this artwork is mounted to the existing granite wall along the escalator. The 55 feet long artwork was entirely pre-fabricated by Sensitile and mocked-up here before shipment to site. Each unique shape was CNC cut using CAD files provided by the designer and each support hole was drilled per guidelines provided by Metro (WMTA). This project can be looked over in depth in our case studies section
