Trying a few ideas out using footage from the "A Land of Violence" shoot. Got to say I'm not sure why this ratio is never used. It has the height advantage of 4:3 without making landscapes feel completely cramped and wasting half your screen.

The best way to get it is to replicate what anamorphic lenses do. Either by using anamorphic lenses or by using filters that create similar effects Check out my other videos here: http://www.youtube.com/user/polcan99

Short test with the lens, had to try the workflow before going to sleep. Couldn't get my brother to be on camera so I made him film me instead. ISCO Ultra Star Anamorphic lens mounted with Pentax Takumar 50mm F1.4 / Canon 60D Found that this lens had 1.9x Squeeze Factor rather than 2x . So edited in 3648x1080 then, exported downscaled to 1920X568, aspect ratio turned out to be something like 3.38 : 1 BGM 'Shades of Spring' - Kevin MacLeod
