1. Across the Threshold with Maya Deren

This video pairs images from Maya Deren's experimental short films with physicist Arthur Eddington's quantum description of taking a single step through a door. Deren's avant-garde cinematic worlds operate with a freewheeling approach to physical reality. Characters float and fall through space in defiance of gravity, leaping across different planes in defiance of logic...or so it seems. By combining Deren's dreamlike images with Eddington's words we are reminded that perhaps the "real world" is less stable and certain than we like to think...maybe the boundless artist and the man of science have a great deal in common after all. The concept behind this video was inspired by the work of Martha Nochimson in the book "David Lynch Swerves," which uses quantum physics as a prism through which to view David Lynch's later films.

    • At Land (1944) - Maya Deren

      from Empusae Added 948 21 1

At Land (1944) is a 15-minute silent experimental film written, directed by, and starring Maya Deren. It has a dream-like narrative in which a woman, played by Deren, is washed up on a beach and goes on a strange journey encountering other people and other versions of herself. Deren once said that the film is about the struggle to maintain one's personal identity. The composer John Cage and the poet and film critic Parker Tyler were involved in making the film, and appear in the film, which was shot at Amagansett, Long Island. Empusae created a genuine soundtrack to accompany this silent film. The music should be seen as an experiment to create a soundtrack inspired purely by the images and visual atmospheres.

A tutorial session from the Editing Strategies class at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In this video, we look at the first minute of Maya Deren's At Land to discover Deren’s experience of making the film. Acting as if we were sitting next to Deren in the cutting room, we try to isolate, identify and interpret every creative decision made in the sequence. By Kevin B. Lee

                    from Ned Botwood Smith Added

A gay-themed reinterpretation of Maya Deren's 1943 psychodrama, filmed approximately shot for shot. Having written an A-Level pamphlet on the original, seminal writing on the film had begun to derange me. The focus of these interpretations was too often the film's elusive protagonist, which seemed to me, far-removed from Deren's intentions to depict a 'universal dreaming experience'. I believe Meshes' protagonist was never supposed to be Deren herself, or even, as popular criticism forgets, a blank avatar for the domestic female. The film is 'concerned with the interior experiences of an individual', not the plight of one woman. My partial recreation is an attempt to demonstrate this popular misunderstanding. By replacing key symbols from the film (substituting a telephone for a dustpan, a single flower for two) I was able to recreate every shot from the original, but change the film's meaning and sentiment. Directed by Ned Botwood Smith Featuring a combined soundtrack by Teiji Ito and Seamings Starring Deia Tollman, Plum O'Keefe and Charles Kind Shot on a Canon EOS 500D
