A Requiem for Edward Snowden is a new audio-visual performance work created by composer Matthew Collings and multi-media artist Jules Rawlinson. The music is performed live by four musicians against a background of video projections created live and incorporating images from on-stage cameras, stock footage and hacked documents. It will be performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August as part of Made in Scotland — a programme which showcases the best Scottish work to audiences and promoters from around the world. Described by its creators as a ‘digital opera’, it is based around the actions and decisions of whistleblower Edward Snowden. It focuses on themes which are extremely relevant to how we live in the 21st century: loss of faith and security, the hacking of digital media, invasion of privacy and personal sacrifice. Snowden’s revelations have shown that we live in a world where we are totally reliant not just on electronic communication, but on daily routines in which our privacy is routinely compromised. The phones that we carry with us in our pockets not only keep us connected to the world, but also allow others to delve into our most personal data. A Requiem for Edward Snowden explores the consequences of this through a combination of electronic sound, acoustic instrumentation and live visuals in a 50 minute-long performance. A Requiem for Edward Snowden was developed with a Creative Scotland Artist’s Bursary and in collaboration with New Media Scotland and Edinburgh College of Art. It was premiered in October 2014 to a sell-out audience at Edinburgh’s Reid Concert Hall, and was subsequently performed at the CCA in Glasgow in March 2015.

One photo could never tell the story as this still-photo audio-visual does. One evening driving past the Alice Springs Welcome Sign, south Stuart Highway, I saw a Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus axillaris) youngster hovering lit up orange by the sunset light. I did a quick swerve into the parking area in front of the sign and jumped out of my car and managed to take 38 still photos of the youngster hovering in front of me. The trouble is, it was above as well as in front, so my camera couldn't catch where the hovering action took place. I had to help it. This is where it happened and this is the BSK youngster who did the hovering. I've tried several times to represent the hover on still photo audio-visual and this has been the best attempt so far. I took 38 still photos of this independent juvenile Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus axillaris) hovering beside the Alice Springs welcome sign one evening in sunset light. Of course, when you're photographing BSKs hovering you are photographing up and all you get is sky as background and the hovering could be happening virtually anywhere! The sun was setting and the BSK was back-lit and lit-up orange in the light. I decided to try and put the hover into context and this is the result. I made the AV mono because I photographed the welcome sign during the day. Of course, in real time the hover happens at much faster tempo than this, but then you can't see the individual photos ... this is slower and is a compromise! Music: excerpt from Kevin MacLeod "Rite of Passage" (freemusicarchive.org) Audio-visual production: Me I used Pictures to Execution 8, CyberLink PowerDirector 12 and Audacity to make the AV PS: The light-plane flying over in the background soundscape was also recorded at the welcome sign.
