He said he did his best to raise curlew but now he can't do much more on his own. Please contact Harry on 0421107178 or email him on harry@thesolutioneers.tv ----------------------------- Full story Harry's a man with a passion, a man with a mission! A passion to maintain our heritage and a mission to restore old masterpieces to working order! Mind you, the masterpiece may be just that, or simply a relic that oozes history. The Curlew is his latest mission. The once spritely ferry of 90 years continuous service has captured Harry’s attention. She has a record not bettered by any ferry in the history of Australia, a proud heritage that will be hard to beat in this era of built in obsolescence. She was built by Percy Duncan for the Long Jetty Ferry service. She then operated in Woy Woy followed by the Hawkesbury and Pittwater. Harry has been a fighter for maintaining important heritage icons for many years. Previously responsible for the restoration of around 4,000 centuries old derelict heritage buildings on his native Island of Corfu, Harry turned to the heritage sensitive British who responded to his cry for help with the buildings in Corfu. He is now reaching out to Aussies with a passion for the water to help save our maritime heritage. Harry talks about his beloved boats and you can see his passion in every one of his words. “Watch out” he laughs, “I am back with a vengeance and determined to save these old ladies of the sea” In the 80’s and 90’s Harry Tsoukalas ran his recycling building material centres in Sydney. After nearly 20 years he moved back to his birthland of Corfu, Greece. “I was very lucky to be in Australia where I learned so much about respecting our heritage. When I went back to Corfu, I had a dream to save as many of the old houses as possible. I was able to put what I had learned in Australia into practice and now with the help of many Brits nearly 4000 old houses are ‘living’ and occupied once again as holiday homes and getaways. A great solution for the houses, great holiday destinations for the British owners and tourists, and a big input to the local community. A win win win situation!” But now Harry has to use lots of magic to make his new boat mission work. He tells how his Greek name translates to “Harry Potter” but his ‘magic wand’ has run out of steam. “Did you know boats all have female names?” he asks, and “every day we lose one more of our beautiful old ladies?” he added. “Many sink on the moorings or are used as mooring minders, while others go straight to the chopping board. “There are so many people out there who would love to be a part of the boating world, but don’t have the know how.” Harry thinks he can find a happy medium where he can help many people to do this and at the same time he can save as many of his “girls” as possible. He now has 12 or 15, he is not sure - he has lost count. “All need work, some lots – some not quite so much he laughs” From sailing boats to power and trawlers, plus ferries and historic yachts, he has them all. For the people from Sydney to Newcastle and beyond, Harry’s latest mission the “Curlew” is a great opportunity to get involved, have some fun, do some serious work and reap the benefits and experience amazing opportunities on the water. Time is running out for this old girl. Harry had only a short time when he learned about the Curlew’s plight. He had until Australia Day to raise her from the bottom where she had sunk at her mooring in Gosford. And he did it! He admits there was a lot of the Harry magic power involved on that day as in the end he was on his own battling the tides and the vigorous seas.
