              • Low light with Sony a7s and DJI Ronin M

                from Brock Gomez Added 122 2 1

I went to the local skatepark to get some lowlight tests with the Sony a7s and the DJI Ronin. I loaded a few picture profiles from DVXUSER's spreadsheet ( https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rGxsgFMLk-oATs-05iN6fzb-uGkcgvLBIgJo_2GWvB8/edit#gid=0 ) to test in the horrible lighting conditions at the park. There are about 30 different light sources of varying intensity and temperature which makes shooting there extremely difficult. For the picture profiles I used "S-LOG2 for A7s", "Tapp Baked In 1" and "Canon DSLR look". I've never worked with LOG footage and it shows. I had great difficulty nailing anything close to the right color temperature (no external monitor or any sort of scopes), and I didn't want to go over 20,000 ISO. I'm sure with time it's possible to learn the LOG shooting/grading workflow, but for me personally I don't have a huge use for it. I don't have to grade most of my projects for too much of a look, and if I can get it close in camera I'm usually fine. The Canon DSLR look wasn't really that great either. The blacks were a little too black for my liking, the saturation/color information wasn't really there giving the footage an almost sepia tone. Not really into it compared to the Tapp Baked In 1 profile. Tapp provided a decent amount of latitude, was easy to expose properly and had the best color rendition of the 3 profiles I worked with. It was by far the easiest to get a workable image with, and the color correction adjustments made in Premiere were very minimal. Without a doubt I liked the Tapp Baked In 1 profile the best. Aside from the picture profiles, the a7s was a MONSTER in low-light situations (but you probably knew that already). I was shooting with a pretty poor lens, the ProMaster 11-19mm f/4.5-5.6. It's not made for full-frame cameras but was able to cover the sensor at 18mm f/5.6. Obviously a faster lens would have helped, but the goal was to shoot at higher ISOs to see how usable the image would be. I was pleasantly surprised that the camera handled ISOs of 8000 and 12800 with ease. The noise was minimal and there was still some usable color information in the native file. I'm sure it's a really good time playing with this camera and a fast lens. My main camera is a Canon C100 and there's no contest in low light between these two cameras. The C100 does a lot of things really well but this little guy is a beast in low light. This was also my first time using the DJI Ronin-M. It's fun as hell. I know why people buy a gimbal and fall in love with them. Probably the most fun I've had shooting in the last year or two. Setting up the camera for the first time took a while, but once I got the balance done properly it was no problem. The weight was pretty minimal, and being able to change hand positions while shooting (two on the side handles or one on the top handle) helped reduce fatigue considerably. I was also shocked by the battery life. After two hours of shooting the battery was still showing around 75% charged. That was a complete surprise. Overall the a7s with the Ronin-M was a REALLY fun setup to play around with. I'm sure the a7sII will be even more exciting considering the improvements they've made in the last 2 years. Can't wait to get my hands on that one!

On August 7th, the Rideon team travelled to Cyprus for a week of vacation, riding and filming. Despite the high levels of temperatures and humiditity, Jason Eustathiou, Dimos Ganiatsas and John Manaras were able to ride all day long, searching for the most unique spots and tearing apart every one of them. We want to thank Monster Energy for helping us out, as well as all the locals of all the cities we visited in Cyprus.
