A school of akules or bigeye scads lingers at the edge where sand and coral meets: fascinating to watch and swim through. They are curious so for them it is a constant struggle to flight or stay and look.

Amazing scenes of thousands of bait fish swim around a whale shark, or is the whale shark hypnotised by the ball of bait fish. Not interested in eating the fish, the whale shark allows the huge ball of fish to encircle him. A rare sight!

Highlights were the big bait balls scurrying, 2 Yellowtail casually swimming by while stalking their prey. More bait ball action as a Sea Lion was in hunting mode. Very cool to watch the fish splinter off into different groups as the Sea Lion pierced their school, with twists and turns. Good thing the viz was good to capture the action, but too bad the camera was struggling against the haze in the distance. Temp: 64 degrees.

Please contact us for required license/permission for use in any medium : wildshutterimaging@gmail.com This was filmed during the Goliath Grouper aggregation, over several weeks while diving the MV Castor in Boynton Beach , FL. The aggregation occurs annually in South Florida during the months of August through the end of September. This is one of a half-dozen sites in the world where you can witness one of the oceans most remarkable gatherings. While this short film only captures a small glimpse of this extraordinary event, being in the water and filming this project was an experience beyond words…I created this film to share that experience... and to persuade others as to why we must continue to protect this... Unfortunately there is some controversy surrounding the Goliath Groupers here in Florida. They received protection from the state back in the early 90's due to severe overfishing and near extinction. Over the last several years, we're seeing the population just begin to come back. However, the same fishing industry that was responsible for their near extinction, is now putting pressure on the state to once again lift the Goliath Grouper's protection and begin culling these fish. Myself, other divers, and many within the scientific community feel that lifting the Goliath's protection would only be decimating to the species and all the progress that's been made. The South Florida Underwater Photography Society (SFUPS), along with other organizations within the community, are putting together an annual International Goliath Grouper Photo Competition to begin next year. The event will be to support the continued protection of the groupers, and to attract attention from around the globe as the significance of this remarkable aggregation. Another amazing day watching mother nature at work. Did an afternoon double dip on the Castor. The skies were overcast with dark, heavy rain clouds making shooting conditions a bit tough as there was little ambient light. There was plenty of current to navigate and a significant thermocline. As I was tucked behind the bow trying to stay out of the current I looked up and saw the strobes of one on the other diver/photographers firing about thirty feet above me with the most incredible bait ball action. I slowly kicked towards the surface to involve myself in the action. The jacks were spinning around eating the cigar minnows like they were the cherry on an ice cream sunday. The Goliath was trying to hang mid water in the current mindfully paying attention to the minnow, jacks and divers. A second Goliath decided to join in and in that moment the first Goliath said enough and gave one of the those barks that you feel just below your sternum. Wish the microphone would have picked up the sound. And then in concert the whole show moved down to the wreck. I could do this over and over again. Great day!!!
