The Pedway: Elevating London is a documentary on the post-war redevelopment in the City of London - focusing on the attempt to build an ambitious network of elevated walkways through the city. Featuring interviews with professor of town planning Michael Hebbert (UCL), architecture critic Jonathan Glancey, city planning officer Peter Wynne Rees and writer Nicholas Rudd-Jones (Pathways), the film explores why the 'Pedway' scheme was unsuccessful and captures the abandoned remains that, unknown to the public, still haunt the square mile. Planned & Constructed by Chris Bevan Lee www.twitter.com/elevatinglondon (Part of the Barbican Urban Wandering - Film and the London Landscape season 2013 & Rotterdam Architecture Festival 2013) Fair use is codified at Section 107 of the Copyright Act. The installation-performance is the result of another cooperation with the video artist Sophie Clements and composer-violinist Nell Catchpole. As in the previous installation at the Barbican Center in London it took place in a structure detached from the urban surroundings - only this time not in a 70'ies utopian megastructure but an old farm house forgotten in between the apartment blocks of central Milan. We followed the idea of using objects found at the site as the basis of an audiovisual installation to emphasize the space and its origins at a transitory moment. The Cascina Cuccagna is being transformed from a decaying farm house into a center for a variety of social and cultural initiatives which rent the space together from the city. The idea to use wooden handles for the installation derives from an old man taking care of the local gardening initiative, who told us that the "young people" don´t know the difference anymore between a shovel and a spade and that his grandfather used to make the handles of the tools by himself during winter time. The inevitable vanishing of the rural culture and loss of its knowledge and meanings seemed an appropriate theme for this space and its surrounding. We found a variety of 18 different types of handles made from ash still manufactured in a village in Piemonte ans suspended them in the space. A basis for the sound scape was folk music from Lombardy as well as resonating sounds generated by hitting the handles. The video above is an excerpt from the live concert at Cascina Cuccagna using live cameras as a feedback source.
