          • Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony and Zhang Yimou

            from Go Grady / Added

Peabody Award Year: 2008 Producing Organization: NBC Olympics Long Citation: An exponential magnification of what was once known in television as a "spectacular," the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony was the most ambitious, enthralling and expansive in the history of the modern Games. It was staged from the beginning with television in mind. The creative director of the ceremony, famed Chinese film director Zhang Yimou, who shares this award with NBC, worked closely with the network's Dick Ebersol, David Neal, and Bucky Gunts to orchestrate and choreograph this gargantuan undertaking so that it played with maximum effect both to the stadium crowds and to the cameras that carried the ceremony worldwide. In addition to the standard pool feed, NBC supplemented coverage with 26 of its own unilateral cameras, giving director Gunts an unprecedented multitude of images with which to work. For creating a spell-binding, unforgettable celebration of the Olympic promise, featuring a cast of thousands, a Peabody Award goes to the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony and Zhang Yimou. Production Credit: Executive producer: Dick Ebersol. Opening Ceremony creator and executive producer: Zhang Yimou. Producer: David Neal. Segment producers: Mark levy, Molly Solomon, John Gilmartin, Jim Bell, Rebecca Chatman. Directors: Bucky Gunts, Zhang Yimou. Writers: Casey Barrett, Aaron Cohen, Joe Gesue, Lee Ann Gschwind. Reporters: Bob Costas, Matt Lauer, Joshua Cooper Ramo.

            • Beijing Welcomes You

              from ChinaFile / Added

Within the past decade, Beijing has debuted as the defining city of the now and foreseeable future, and China as the ascendant global power. Beijing is the ultimate representation of China's political and cultural capital, of its might—and threat. For so long, the city was closed off to the world, literally built around the Forbidden City, the icon of all that was ominous about China. But now, the country is eager to show off its new openness, its glory and magnanimity, and Beijing is its star. When Tom Scocca arrived in 2004—an American eager to see another culture—Beijing was looking toward welcoming the world to its Olympics four years later, and preparations were in full swing to create a renewed city. Scocca talked to the scientists tasked with changing the weather; interviewed designers and architects churning out projects; checked out the campaign to stop public spitting; documented the planting of trees, the rerouting of traffic, the demolition of the old city, and the construction of the new metropolis. Beijing Welcomes You is a glimpse into the future and an encounter with an urban place we do not yet fully comprehend, and the superpower it is essential we get to know better.  —Riverhead Books

Created as a three-channel installation video piece, "China Doll" premiered in The Other New York Biennial 2012 at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY. Since Americans won the arms race with Russia, we have been determined to win “the future”. This euphemistic reference to China as a threatening new superpower is the inspiration for the project, China Doll. I grew up feeling ashamed that I was Chinese American, and now the US fears China. In response to this astonishing shift culturally and personally, self-racism and identity politics animate ideas throughout the piece. China is a frightening country; china is fragile porcelain. Dolls are fetishized Oriental women; plastinated corpses are life-sized dolls. Tiger Mom politics, Beijing Olympics and Youtube celebrity Barbie make-up tutorials intermingle to create a weird brand of frenetic and ironic internet-age sincerity. video by Jennifer Hsu 2012
