My Ballade for Piano No. 3 was written in 1977, and completed a day before my 21st birthday. One might ask, “Why so somber?” I wrote it thinking about how a new and special friend was soon to be moving away. The piece is a good example of the harmonic style I was developing. There are elements of the Renaissance, Ravel & Satie. The feeling is one of a gentle, majestic resignation, contrasted with moments of remembered happiness. Reflections – A Suite for Piano, Op. 104, 1st mvt. – Benjamin Belew, piano This is the 1st movement of a three movement suite for piano I wrote in 2012. It’s performed here beautifully by Benjamin Belew. This suite has several sources of inspiration. The first movement, “Morning Light”, uses a theme that was “playing” in my mind as I woke up one morning several years ago. It reflects a blissful feeling of peace and innocence. The second movement, “Not Forgotten” was inspired by the memory of a very inspiring friend, artist and musician, Ruth Gabriel – a good friend for over 30 years – who passed away in 2008. The third movement, “Soaring”, is inspired by nature, the sky, and the Joy that springs unexpectedly from simple moments. Contact me at dvic56@aol.com for info on sheet music.

This work was written in 2013, and is my first setting of Shelly. As I wrote this work I was deeply moved and affected by the dramatic language of the poem. The whole scene came alive with great force. Contact me at dvic56@aol.com for info on sheet music.

This is a piece I wrote in 1988 that was finally premiered in 2012 by Benjamin Belew at a Monterey County Composers Forum Concert. In a way, this music is what America means to me. It doesn’t come from anything deliberate, but simply is there in my heart. I have a feeling, though, that a lot of Americans would agree with me. I don’t mean to sound overly sentimental, and I realize there are problems here too, but we have something in our hearts that’s strong and abiding. For a video, this music suggested a love story from America’s heartland. The sheet music is available from me. Email: dvic56@aol.com

I love the simplicity of this text - that invites us to come and share a few treasured moments experiencing the wonders of nature.
