      • SHINE ON / / Black & Latino Youth Redefining Manhood

        from EyeCandy Films / Added

26 delegations of college-aged men all around the country — from the likes of Colorado College, to Colby College in Maine, and everywhere in between — meet annually year to discuss the cultural dictates of Black and Latino manhood on college campuses. The following short film documents this conference, now in its 12th year, as it asks this year: How do we redefine masculinity — what do we keep for ourselves as things unique markers of our cultures, and what things do we let go and can identify as reductive rather than productive legacies of patriarchy? Every era is its own unique historical vantage point and that is more true now than has ever been. Masculinity has evolved in recent years to become, rather than a straight-jacket, is an opportunity — a space in which we have the ability to exchange some of those things that might have become burdens and instead shine. This is a song that addresses marriage, divorce, and remarriage/adultery. Roland Zimmerman wrote this song in 2012 and his son, Ryan, named it, “The Tomcat Song”. Roland is singing "The Tomcat Song" with his original soundtrack. Although adultery is accepted by so-called “Christian” churches, what does the Bible, which is the Word of God, say about this? "Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and the one who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.” (Luke 16:18 LEB) Now the works of the flesh are clearly revealed, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lustfulness, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, fightings, jealousies, angers, rivalries, divisions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkennesses, revelings, and things like these; of which I tell you before, as I also said before, that they who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21 MKJV) "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:27-28 ESV) Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled, but fornicators and adulterers God will judge. (Hebrews 13:4 MKJV) Don't you know that evil people won't have a share in the blessings of God's kingdom? Don't fool yourselves! No one who is immoral or worships idols or is unfaithful in marriage or is a pervert or behaves like a homosexual will share in God's kingdom. Neither will any thief or greedy person or drunkard or anyone who curses and cheats others. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10 CEV) If you are guilty of adultery, may you repent and forsake it, and find peace and restoration with God through Jesus Christ, and may you “…go, and sin no more.” (John 8:11 KJV) This may also be a helpful writing for you: www.theChristiansCompass.org/divrem

Ann Holt explains that in order to make sense of the biblical gospel we have to pay attention to the narrative – to the story of Jesus – and how he fits into the bigger story of God’s creation and what is happening to it. This talk was filmed at a national consultation, entitled, 'A Faithful Gospel: How should we understand what the gospel is?'. It is the first in a series of five events taking place as part of the Evangelical Alliance's 'Confidence in the Gospel' initiative. For more information go to eauk.org/confidence
