Footage I shot of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan 2008 on the RED ONE Digital Cinema Camera. I edited this piece together (using some footage from my previous Afghanistan clips) as a demo to show the capabilities of this new technology, and how it can bring quality, scalability, and longevity back to combat zone footage unseen since WWII/Viet Nam era. The actual resolution of the footage is 4096x2048, almost 5x full 1080P High Definition. I only had the camera for 5 days of shooting, and this is what I pieced together for concept presentation purposes. It is my hope that the DoD shows interest in assembling a specially trained team of service-members to film on this new equipment and provide footage to disseminate back to the public at a quality this generation deserves, both home and abroad. Jason Wingrove of FXGuide recently interviewed me regarding this footage and my thoughts on advancing this quality for Combat Zone acquisition. It is episode #015 here: http://www.fxguide.com/therc/red_centre_015/ There have been a couple magazine articles as well, High Definition #31 (Aug08), Government Video (Aug08) and Videography magazines (Aug08), and DV Magazine (Sep08). Camera = RED ONE Lens = Angenieux 20-120 T2.9 Music = Klaus Badelt - Rescue Dawn

Green River is one of the few locations in Utah that has been a proving ground for Mountain Biking. Over the past decade, hundreds of riders visited Utah to tackle the terrain and show there style. Its been unfortunate in the past couple of years, Green River has been viewed as "played" or "overdone". Bas has always wanted to give it a shot, and so this fall we drove south to Utah to give it our best While it may have been the shoulder season for mountain biking, Utah was a great escape from snowy Canada. We spent 10 days waking up at sunrise, filming, going back to the Super 8 for breakfast, digging, then filming at sunset. Our trip had the unfortunate ending of Bas separating his shoulder on the last hit we built, luckily we still had plenty of footage to create "Shoulder Season" Shot on Location: Green River, Utah Rider: Bas van Steenbergen Produced by: Mind Spark Cinema Cinematography: Harrison Mendel Edited by: Harrison Mendel Music By: Sons of the East With support from: Transition Bikes, Blackhawk Wheel co, Skyride Bike Shop and Dissent Labs

My latest deployment to Afghanistan in 2009 yield's further footage of Air Force/Air National Guard Combat Rescue/Medevac operations during one of, if not the most active period of operations ever. This has been an incredibly sobering deployment This is a teaser of footage to come when I am home to edit further. I wasn't able to arrange for a RED camera this time around, but have been able to record some decent HD footage on a new little Sony Handycam (left on auto exposure and a sort of manual focus). The "SLR-Zoom" size Gorillapod has come in quite handy as well for otherwise impossible to get angles with the Handycam. Everything has been done in Houdini except the animation of the helicopter which I did in Maya (the model of the helicopter has been taken from turbosquid.com site). Rendered with Mantra PBR and comp in Nuke. Any ideas, suggestions and advice are welcome so I am going to be glad if you comment
