At the Edge, one of the things we take very seriously is that we want to "Tell The World" about what Jesus has done for us. Earlier this month Nine members of our church took on the challenge of going and doing just that in Nicaragua, through our partnership with Verbo Church in Bluefields, Nicaragua.

What does it mean to dance for Maypole? What is the real Maypole dance? Two Creole community dance organizers claim vastly different stances on the annual festival held on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. Miss Carmen feels a responsibility to rescue the local traditional style of dance and dress of times past to honor the city's cultural heritage. Darna, on the other hand, embraces everything from Soca to Carnaval as opportunities for personal expression to celebrate the month of May. This piece explores dance and costume amid these clashing views. This film is part of a larger project to present footage collected in a month-long field school in Bluefields, NAAS, Nicaragua during May 2013. Footage was shot by Ohio State University students and edited by Maggie Bissler. This film, was screened at Digi-EYE, presented by The Ohio State Department of Theatre.

Darna Hodgson, a Creole "comparsa" organizer of the Point Teen neighborhood prefers Maypole be open to individual interpretation and change, especially in the incorporation of Carneval inspired dance moves and costumes. This openness to change puts her at odds with the more traditional comparsa organizers like Miss Carmen of Old Bank as well as the alcaldía (local government) which funds and oversees Maypole festivities. Comparsa Furia Costeña is part of an ongoing project to present footage from a month-long field school in Bluefields, NAAS, Nicaragua. Footage was shot by Ohio State University students and edited by Maggie Bissler. The resulting film, consisting of a trio of interviews with local dance group organizers, will be screened at Digi-EYE, presented by The Ohio State Department of Theatre.
