++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ BRIAN MACKAY-LYONS MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects Dalhousie University, Halifax "A Life in Architecture" Thursday April 25, 2013 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ MACKAY-LYONS SWEETAPPLE ARCHITECTS is a world leader in critical regionalist architecture, designing buildings, which are a modern expression of local climate and material culture, at home and abroad. The work demonstrates a commitment to cultural sustainability and environmental stewardship. Through the presentation of residential, public, and Ghost projects, the lecture will articulate a modern regionalist philosophy and design language. This involves both 'listening' to the logic of natural processes and cultural traditions, and 'willing' a utopian position. This body of work expresses a frugal environmental ethic - economy. The work of MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects has been the subject of over 100 exhibitions in Canada, the United States, and Europe, 100 design awards, 300 publications, 200 public lectures and 18 academic chairs internationally. Brian is a fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (FRAIC), and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA), Brian was named Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (Hon FAIA) in 2001. http://www.mlsarchitects.ca ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Canadian architect Brian MacKay-Lyons feels that modern architecture education distances students from the tangible act of building. To provide students with more hands-on experience, he created the Ghost Architectural Laboratory. For two weeks each summer, students and professors work under MacKay-Lyons's guidance to build structures that explore what is sustainable and meaningful. "e²: the economies of being environmentally conscious" is an ongoing PBS documentary series about solutions to the world's most pervasive environmental challenges. The series continues its flagship coverage of sustainable architecture with "e² design season three," featuring innovations in green building and planning from around the globe. Check your local PBS listings for television broadcast dates in your area. The "e²" series and its video podcasts are produced by kontentreal, and distributed within the United States by PBS. More information is available at http://www.pbs.org/e2/ and http://www.e2-series.com/
