    • Oh Susanna performing "Mozart for the Cat" by Susan McClelland at our CBC All In a Day Namedropper Extravaganza

from OTTAWA INTL WRITERS FESTIVAL / Added

Songstress Oh Susanna's NAMEDROPPER album was released in October 2014, and for it, she asked some of her favourite Canadian songwriters to pen songs especially for her. So... Alan Neal asked not only Oh Susanna but the songwriters themselves to gather at Knox Presbyterian Church, to share the songs and the stories behind them. In this clip, songwriters Susan McLelland and Luke Doucet (known together as White Horse) joined Oh Susanna on stage for a performance of "Mozart for the Cat" which McLelland wrote for the album. Before performing Alan Neal asked McLelland about some of the lines in the song - particularly "champagne for the children." Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet tied the musical knot with Whitehorse, marrying their chemistry as a smoldering duo. Whitehorse’s live show is built on their signature blistering guitars and harmonies, but also brings much more to the stage with complex looped layers of percussion, keyboard and telephone receiver amplification. In 2013, Whitehorse made their sold out debut at Massey Hall and their first full-length album, The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss, was short listed for the Polaris Music Prize. The band also recently released a French EP, Éphémère sans repère.

We opened our 2014 Fall Festival with a hilarious and enlightening discussion with Alan Doyle. CBC All in a Day host, Alan Neal sat down with the Great Big Sea frontman to discuss his new memoir "Where I Belong." Throughout the interview Neal got Doyle to take us back to the village of Petty Harbour where he grew up and our audience members asked Alan about his relationship to the village and where he thought he was going next. If you missed this amazing night of storytelling you will not want to miss this clip. Alan Doyle is also a wonderful storyteller and a creative force. In Where I Belong, he paints a vivid, raucous and heartwarming portrait of a curious young lad born into a small coastal fishing community and destined to become a renowned musician who carries the musical tradition of generations before him and has brought his signature sound to the world. Filled with the lore and traditions of the East Coast and told in a voice that is at once captivating and refreshingly candid, this is a narrative journey about small-town life, curiosity and creative fulfillment, and finally, about leaving everything you know behind only to learn that no matter where you go, home will always be with you. Alan Doyle is a Canadian musician and actor, best known as a lead singer in the Canadian folk-rock band Great Big Sea. In 2012, Doyle released his first solo album, Boy on Bridge, which made the top twenty on the Canadian Albums chart. Alan lives in St. John's, Newfoundland. Visit him at www.alandoyle.ca
