The Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee has entered the scientific record via a new paper in the Journal of Experimental Biology. Decades of refined technique, uncommonly motivated humans and herps, and good old-fashioned large sample size.

On May 25th 2013 it seemed that TWO MILLION people in almost 50 countries (including over 100 people in Sonora, California, USA) held public demonstrations against the giant agribusiness corporation known as Monsanto. Sonora, CA is the hub of Tuolomne County, so folks came from several counties (including Calaveras County) to celebrate independence from Monsanto and decry the bad works of Monsanto. Earth Abides Catholic Worker Farm sent three of their farmers to join the protest and show-off our saved heirloom beans that Farmer Chris has been growing since he was a child. His maternal Grandfather named Scalzo brought the seeds over from Italy, and Earth Abides Farm in Calaveras County has been growing the seeds/beans for 37 years.

The two-person district attorney race heated up Tuesday, as Barbara Yook and David Singer raised issues of too little experience, not enough prosecutions and a potential conflict of interest. Yook, of San Andreas, asked Singer how he planned to lead an office in which most of the deputy district attorneys had more experience than him. Singer, of Rancho Calaveras, asked Yook how she avoids a conflict of interest, seeing that she’s married to Deputy Alan Serpa of the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office. The debate was filmed at the Public Access Television Studio in San Andreas, and it was sponsored by the Calaveras Enterprise.
