2011 Caparzo Sangiovese IGT, Tuscany, Italy $12.95 In my roles at both Good Food Revolution and Chatelaine I am continually on the search for the very best value wines available, and so just the other day I was delighted to be introduced to this Tuscan “gateway” wine by none other than Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini. Elisabetta happens to own four multi award-winning properties in Tuscany: Caparzo and Altesino in Montalcino, Borgo Scopeto in Chianti Classico, and Doga delle Clavule in Maremma. Drawing from the Sangiovese wine that doesn’t make its way into the Caparzo Brunello, the Borgo Scopeto Chianti Classico, and the Doga delle Clavule Morellino, this approachable Tuscan red really is a superb introduction to the varietal. Whilst exhibiting a ripe, accessible, and palate-pleasing dark berry fruit profile, there is also a bit of Sangiovese’s trademark grip in there, but not too much so as to frighten off the uninitiated. With a portion of the wine seeing some time in large older oak barrels, this is a little more complex than one may first imagine, with some spicy chocolate and rose nuances in there too for good measure. It certainly is a hell of a lot of wine for the money, and is up there as a contender for one of my best value wines in the market right now, delivering bags of hedonistic enjoyment for the buck. 4 apples out of 5 And now over to Elisabetta to tell your the story behind this cracking Tuscan treat…
