    Added in the concept of "death" after a fixed cell age, allowing old spaces to be filled with new growth. This results in a periodic "blooming" effect where growth occurs in regular intervals. This may be very beautiful when expressed in three dimensions (next step), but maybe I could use this current result as a heightmap to augment the surfaces of existing 3D models!

      Added the concept of "age" to each cell, then used it to change the color of each cell over time. After a certain age the cell "dies", allowing more growth to fill in.

        "Diamoeba" rules from MCell's 2D CA lexicon (http://www.mirekw.com/ca/rullex_life.html) running in custom sandbox written in openFrameworks. All live cells tend to coalesce into regular solid diamonds with undulating boundaries, appearing to be trying to distribute cells evenly along it's outer edges. Small bodies die out if they are not absorbed by the main body.

          "Stains" rules from MCell 2D CA lexicon (http://www.mirekw.com/ca/rullex_life.html) running in custom sandbox written in openFrameworks. Given almost any seed, this ruleset rapidly grows outwardly in a pattern vaguely reminiscent of nested fractal designs until ultimately stopping abruptly at some random point nearby. Very much resembles behavior of a finite amount of liquid spreading through a fabric by capillary forces, stopping when an saturation equilibrium has been reached.

            "Maze" being generated by 2D cellular automata rules. Curiously, by adding a single rule (1 line of code) one can create the exact same structure, but with "mice" that run through the maze all by themselves. Craziness!

              "Coral" rules running my 2D cellular automata sandbox. Notice how the spontaneously-formed spiny bodies appear to quickly consume stranded cells as though they were nutrients, then slowly expand over time as if responding to food or light sources nearby. My favorite part of this simulation is the hyperactive feelers found on the boundaries of the coral spines, very much like the anemones found on real coral. Perhaps their job is to wave in the current and pick up stray cells to be assimilated and consumed by the larger body. An emergent symbiotic relationship grown from a two-dimensional grid of white and black cells!

                "Flakes" rules from the MCell 2D CA lexicon (http://www.mirekw.com/ca/rullex_life.html) running in a custom 2D CA sandbox written in openFrameworks. A small patch of randomly generated live cells at the center of the grid is used as a seed, producing asymmetrical growth in random directions.
