This is a poem for people who have gone missing. It was made in Chongqing, China 2009-10, written onto large semi-transparent sheets of paper and hung up on washing lines through the city, in parks, building sites, tea houses. The piece had its gallery debut in 2015 at Bury Sculpture Centre, UK in the exhibition REMIX, featuring work by a 'mix' of British and Chinese artists. This video shows shots of the installation. Each sheet of Davenport's piece is an 8-word verse, which collages ancient Chinese poems, lines from iconic conceptual and text art sources and modernist and postmodern poetry, finding parallels in form and intent – and knitting together new meanings completely unintended by the originators. Written onto large pieces of semi-transparent paper, one side scripted in English the other Chinese – the scripts co-exist and intermingle calligraphies, significations, syntaxes. Principal artists involved as calligraphers and translators: Wang Jun, Mao Yanyang, Xu Guang Fu, Dan Dan, Deng Chuan and Yan Yan. Davenport frequently shifts between literary and visual modes, exhibiting works as in situ billposter/poems in cities throughout Europe, in galleries and as 3D objects. His 2006 Heartshape Pornography series was handwritten onto artificial apples; in 2008 he relabelled street debris; 1998-2008 his Imaginary Missing People, poems made from missing person notices, were billposted/exhibited in Berlin, Edinburgh, Reykjavik, Paris, London, Bilbao. In 2013 he edited the major poetry/text art anthology The Dark Would and curated two subsequent related exhibitions, with works from Susan Hiller, Richard Long, Simon Patterson, Wang Jun, Caroline Bergvall, Ron Silliman, Jenny Holzer, Tony Lopez, Mike Chavez-Dawson, Steve Giasson, Paula Claire, Carol Watts, Darren Marsh, Tamarin Norwood, derek beaulieu and many others.
