"...Artists are respected by the poor because what they do is an honest way to get out of the slum using one's sheer self as the medium. The money earned is proof pure and simple of the value of that individual... The Artist. The picture a mother's son does in jail hangs on her wall as proof that beauty is possible even in the most wretched. And this is a much different idea than the fancier notion that art is a scam and a ripoff. But you could never explain to someone who uses God's gift to enslave that you have used God's gift to be free." Excerpt 2.25 min. Video installation, HDVD, 2 beamers, 2 plasma screens, 3 red lights, sound, loop, 13 min., 1 min. 30 interlude, variables dimensions Beyond appearances By Jean-Luc Monterosso Directeur de la Maison Européenne de la Photographie With words, colors, images, Chloé Tallot has gone beyond the “Rimbaud” experience. In the course of a conversation with Jérome Clément, a writer and the founder of Television channel ARTE she provided him with a list of 33 words taken out his books. For each of which he had to choose a matching color. Red came back most often. Red is the color of rebellion, honor, of a wound and when tinted with carmine it becomes laughter. Red is the dominating color of the exhibition, while the other two colors, green and blue mix subtly in the surrounding space. Through thread and pixels the warm personnality of Jerome Clement is revealed. But his features, his eyes, his gestures, the quality of his voice, come out diffracted by photography, filming, video. In this exhibition conceived by Chloé Tallot – with the input of Richard Peduzzi – the art of portrait is renewed. Rather than the synthesis of a personnality condensed in one image it becomes a process of unvarelling, destructuring, a visual poliphony. By her technique of creating images through numerous reports and successive analogical or numerical interfaces, Chloé Tallot discourages any attempt at identification. Out of those shifting shapes, those successive transfers there emerges, rather than an emblematic figure, the infinite complexity of the « self ». Through this fragmentary dramaturgy, which is a metaphor of life, Chloé Tallot immerges the viewer in a sea of images where reality and abstraction mingle endlessly, thus opening up for us a rite of initiation, a poetic meditation of the unfathomable mystery of being.»
