Native Americans at First Battle of Newtonia Town Mural Ritchey Civil War Mansion 520 Mill Street Newtonia, Missouri Artist: Doug Hall The first Civil War Battle of Newtonia has historical significance. It is the only Civil War Battle outside of Indian Territory where Native Americans took up arms against other Native Americans to fight for both the North and South. The Union troops were made up of German emigrants…Abolitionists and Pin Cherokees under the command of General Frederick Solomon. They were given direct orders… Quote “ Not to bring on any battles…but to fall back in the direction of Springfield if threatened by superior forces.” Unquote A brief skirmish occurred on September 29,1862 when Union forces probed the Newtonia area. Hearing the gunfire, General Solomon sends Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Jacobi and his ninth Wisconsin infantry to assist. Jacobi uses this brief skirmish to determine that “circumstances” authorized his further advance to Newtonia. In the morning, September 30, Jacobi and his troops advanced to Newtonia splitting his troops for a surprise attack. The rebel spotters discovered the morning attack and the battle begins. By 6:00AM Colonel Lynde and his troops joined into the battle. Union howitzers were sent in and by 7:00AM artillery fire was exchanged. New rebel reinforcements arrived, including Colonel Tandy Walker’s 1st Choctaws and Chickasaws who charged into the battle with war songs and whoops. By 10:00 AM the Union retreated north. The Jacobi Wisconsin forces were all but destroyed with about 50 dead and captured.
