For Brad Feld's Startup Communities trailer, I found myself trying to re-created the look of a line art cover in motion graphic form. To achieve the look, I used Trapcode's 3D stroke, combined with the standard stroke plugin. I also used a bit of the Vegas effect, and using animated masks. In addition to the strokes, I relied on Riot Gear from video copilot for the paint splatters. Overall the production was fairly straight forward. The biggest challenge was trying to figure out where things were in 3D space with the 3D stroke effect. Once you bend it, things get really weird. I'm beginning a second trailer with the same look for the same author this week. If you're interested in a trailer like this, check us out at simplifilm.com/quote.

Animated entirely in After Effects, piece completed for Inksoft.com relied on moving shirt art to tell the story. The opening shot used hand animated masks to show the process of a t-shirt press printing on shirts, rather than relying on a 3D application to perform the task. Lots of work went into creating the shirt designs which were layered Adobe Illustrator files. Displacement maps were used to warp the art to match the wrinkles provided by a layer set to multiple. The script was written by my partner at Simplifilm, Chris Johnson. September Carter (www.septembervoice.com) provided the voiceover. Music came from Audio Jungle. “The Sperm Whales of Greece – Life in the Trenches” documents a scientific expedition through Greece in search of the elusive and endangered Mediterranean Sperm Whale. We join Dr. Alexandros Frantzis of the Pelagos Cetacean Research Institute, onboard the R/V Nereis on a journey into the deepest trenches of the Mediterranean. In the Ionian Sea, we discover a socializing sperm whale family, and study their behavior as they welcome a newborn calf into the group. However, the future for this calf, and its family is uncertain. As their habitat deteriorates due to human pressures, what does the future hold for the most social of the great whales? Common dolphins were once abundant throughout the Mediterranean Sea. Today, they are declining rapidly, surviving only in portions of their former range. In western Greece, the sea around the island of Kalamos is their last stronghold, or at least it used to be. So why are the dolphins disappearing? We interview Giovanni Bearzi, the President of the Tethys Research Institute in Italy, and a Pew Fellow in Marine Conservation. Giovanni has been studying coastal dolphins in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea for two decades. What began as a study on the ecology and behavior of common dolphins around Kalamos, became a systematic record of their demise.
