Smile Train partner surgeon Dr. Ataklitie Berhea from Ethiopia was selected to receive a scholarship for advanced training in multidisciplinary cleft care. “The main problem for these patients not to have the [cleft] surgery could be of different reason, but the main reason is economy. They don’t have money. They may have awareness. They may know it can be fixed, but they don’t have the money. So Smile Train has been supporting for all the surgeries and patients are not paying anything. Everything is covered for them – transportation, meal, hospital stay, surgery, drugs. Everything is covered for patients. “This child was going to have a cleft lip and palate deformity, and she wanted to kill him. But she came to our hospital for surgery. She got information from a [local radio station]. And she heard about it and we fixed the lip and within six months or so we fixed the palate. And she said 'This time, I’m going to take the child to my parents.' “Four and a half years for nearly 5,000 patients. This is not the case some years back. Some years back, when Smile Train was not in the picture it was 150 surgeries a year.”

Smile Train partner surgeon Dr. Lisa Hasibuan of Indonesia was selected to receive a scholarship for advanced training in multidisciplinary cleft care. “I’m happy to see how Smile Train’s house grows in our country. At first we only [did] less than 200 surgery in our centers, but last year we did almost 500 surgeries, one year. It is a big increase and also I know from other plastic surgeons that do partnering with Smile Train. Our previous students they do a lot of outreach surgery and they have their own centers and that’s great. So it could help more and more cleft patients because they usually come from very poor families who cannot afford transportation to the centers. “I have great expectaions. I could help more people, more patietns, with more advanced surgeries so that I could have a complete cleft team that gives them complete surgeries. Holistic surgeries. Speech therapy the alveolar bone graft done, they have maybe later on they have the posterior done. Let’s integrate a holistic approach just like other cleft centers have done. “I think to all the Smile Train donors I am very grateful for what you all have been doing so far and I think you have done very noble things to help those patients. Giving them new futures. Helping us because we have the skill, but sometimes we are stuck with the same problems, right? So please keep doing that good things for humanity.”
