We are Committed to Knocking Down the Walls Between Classroom and Community. There are few places like it: a Big 10 school in the heart of a city. Here, our students are part of a vibrant community, surrounded by Fortune 500 companies and small nonprofits. Arts organizations abound, and the state capitol is just a train ride away. Not content to simply sit in a lecture hall, our students learn by doing. The world becomes their classroom. Mentoring high school students from a low-income neighborhood in St. Paul. Visiting with senior citizens in Athens, Greece. Planning and shooting a television promo for the Timberwolves basketball team. That’s homework. CLA is one of the few colleges in the U.S. to offer the Community Engagement Scholars Program, in which students spend at least 400 hours in community service. We strive to show the world how brightly our students shine. This video features four CLA students: ANUSHA RAMASWAMI, music therapy (Esther Johnson History Day Mentor Scholarship and the Katherine and Gardner Roth Scholarship); CONNOR MCCARTHY, journalism (Howard and Roberta Liszt Scholarship); JUCOBY JOHNSON, BFA acting (Emily Anne Tuttle Scholarship, Tom Paul Drake Memorial Theatre Arts Scholarship, and the Robert A. Turner Scholarship); JILIAN KOSKI, sociology of law, crime, deviance (Barbara Newsome Internship Scholarship).

The College of Liberal Arts Prepares Leaders: Informed, Original Thinkers and Engaged, Global Citizens. Today, leaders need to be able to strategize, interpret changing global conditions, marshal resources, and manage teams of diverse people. Liberal arts students cultivate these skills in their courses and co-curricular activities and apply them during projects, volunteer experiences, and internships. In ways small and large, quiet and loud, CLA students lead. They join one of the 400+ student organizations or launch their own designed around a passion, a vision, an idea. They organize drives for food and clothing. They spend their spring breaks building houses and pursuing social justice. They start their own businesses. They listen to their fellow students and connect them to resources that can help solve a problem. They organize teams that create publications, presentations, plans, and productions. They think for themselves, act for themselves, and can respond to an ever-changing society. They create meaning in their own lives, careers, communities, and the world. This video features three CLA students: DREW COVEYOU, journalism (Chuck Porter Prize, Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Endowed Scholarship, Ethel Curry American Indian Scholarship, and Alumni Scholarship for Student Leaders); SYDNY SPIRES, sociology (Chris Pomarico CLA Student Board Scholarship and the Selmer Birkelo Scholarship); MATT PAULBECK, Bachelor of Individualized Studies: philosophy, political science, and English (John B. Cronin Scholarship).

Where Would We be Without Curiosity, Discovery, and Wonder? By choosing the College of Liberal Arts, our students choose to explore the big questions and confront the grand challenges. As the only liberal arts college in Minnesota with a research-intensive mission, CLA is a unique place for students who are driven to discover. We’re one of fewer than 100 universities in the country designated as “R-1,” with a mission that includes both the importance of teaching and the priority of creating new knowledge. Our faculty are widely recognized leaders in their fields. They are creators, innovators, and pioneers who are conducting transformative research in their fields—and our students are encouraged to share in the excitement of discovery. Through CLA’s Freshman Research and Creative Awards Program and the University-wide undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, our faculty mentor students in research techniques, fostering their ability to dive deeply into a question, to seek truth, and to contribute to our collective knowledge. This video features three CLA students: CAITLYN SLAWNY, speech-language-hearing sciences (Daniel L. McFadden & Beverlee T. Simboli Lab Research Award); REX DAVENPORT, theatre arts & dance (Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program grant, Barbara Reid Scholarship, and Eckland Family Scholarship); ERIK KATOVICH, economics (Douglas and Jane Gorence Endowed Scholarship and Cyrus A. Field & Mary K. Field Scholarship).
