      • This Is Blue (How Different Languages/Cultures Interpret Colours)

Colours seem like a definite thing - they are what they are: ROYGBIV, pink, brown, black, white. But it turns out that different cultures and languages perceive them differently. The English speaking world can't even agree on where the lines are drawn! Intended to be played full screen, on a loop. In the silence is the infinite. Emily-Sarah Boldeman is an emerging, Sydney-based artist. Her paintings and animations explore the interstice between words and phenomena in relation to spiritual transcendence. The mystical, infinite nature of our universe, defies the linguistic conventions through which we conceptualise it. We seek to grasp the moment, the ‘now’, amongst a riot of sounds and imagery. To know it. Paradoxically it is in this very moment of naming, of knowing, that it slips beyond our grasp, infinitely, unutterably lost as we hurtle forward in time. In /cloud/ The Day I Died, the viewer in immersed in a constantly shifting field of colour. A blue square hovers above a rectangular field. It appears to shimmer, manifesting anew moment by moment, as the field morphs around it. This however is an illusion. The square is rendered constantly in the same shade of blue; it is its relationship to its environment that dazzles our eyes and tricks our perception. How can we truly know this phenomena, hovering there, electric, alive, as the world is created new around it?

Produced as part of my final project for university. A study into the interaction of colour and viewer response theory. The purpose of this video is to find out how the viewer feels when watching the image. The colours used were picked at random but arranged in a way that they would flow into one another. If this video makes you feel anything, please let me know in the comments section.
