          from Shannon Silva Added 252 0 0

Since the birth of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in 1987, the girls' tween market has evolved from almost non-existent into a $43 billion-dollar-a-year money-making machine. Framed by the structure of a faux interactive website for tween girls, It's a Girl Thing speaks with consumer critics, tween brand marketers, girls, moms, and educators to explore the seemingly benign cultural universe of candy-coated, pastel-colored, hyper-commercialized girl culture (and the tween queen phenomenon) to reveal the complex and contradictory messages directed at today's young girls. Historical research, playful reenactments and found footage allow the film to look closely, and critically, at the tween market's evolution and the role of Disney and Nickelodeons' tween queens (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Britney Spears, Hilary Duff, Miley Cryus, Miranda Cosgrove, Kiki Palmer, Selena Gomez, and more) in the market's explosion.

Despite progress made through the landmark America Invents Act (AIA) of 2011 and other reform measures, there is a prevailing sentiment that the U.S. patent system is not operating in a way that optimizes innovation and productivity in today's technological and economic environment. With its first meeting of 2013, members of the National Academies' Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable (GUIRR) convened to examine this issue. Invited to open the conversation was Dr. Stuart Graham, Chief Economist for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), who commented on how the agency is evolving to better promote entrepreneurship and technology commercialization.

                    from Raquel Friera Added

L’art de vendre (The art of selling) is an artistic experiment that took place during the Festival of Contemporary Culture of Empordà Ingràvid 2012. It consisted of inserting my artistic work in the commercial circuit, using its language and its channels. The aim of the experiment is to find out the similitudes and differences between art pieces and any other merchandise. Firstly, I did a stage (short stay for learning) in six shops in order to learn “the art of selling” and later on put it into practice in my artistic work. The result is a promotional video where I present my works, that where on sale in the shop windows of the stated shops from November 17th to 24th 2012.
