    • Cornel West & Tavis Smiley on The Poverty Tour: A Call to Conscience (Democracy Now!)

      195 Plays / / 0 Comments

DemocracyNow.org - Democracy Now! interviews two leading African-American voices who have hit the road to challenge President Obama's record on poverty. The veteran broadcaster, Tavis Smiley, and the author and Princeton University Professor Cornel West are in the midst of a 15 city, cross-country trek they have dubbed, "The Poverty Tour: A Call to Conscience." The tour comes on the heels of last week's deficit agreement, which has been widely criticized for excluding a tax hike on the wealthy as well as any measures to tackle high unemployment. On their tour, Tavis Smiley and Cornel West are visiting low-income communities and holding town halls in what they call an attempt, "to highlight the plight of the poor people of all races, colors, and creeds so they will not be forgotten, ignored, or rendered invisible during this difficult and dangerous time of economic deprivation and political cowardice." The Cornel West Academy of Excellence (CWAE) is a leadership program that addresses many of the needs of minority male elementary and middle school students in Wake/Johnston/Durham Counties. CWAE consists of program components that are used to address crucial issues affecting young minority male students. Unfortunately young African American boys are disproportionately suspended, more often they deal with violence and gang activities, they are statistically being raised in single parent households more than any other demographic, and they are lacking role-models. Literacy, Mathematics, Mentoring, and Critical Thinking are the core components used to address some of these issues. The academy provides its services to 35 African American male elementary and middle school students in Wake/Johnston/Durham Counties.
