This video is a companion piece to my documentary short, The Words of the Emperor (https://vimeo.com/43711630). In April 2012, I traveled throughout northeastern China to report on the Manchu language. Formerly an official state language during the Qing Dynasty, China's last dynasty, Manchu now is on the verge of extinction. There are more than 10 million ethnic Manchus in China, yet fewer than 20 native speakers remain. In this video, Manchu native speaker He Shihuan sings a tune traditionally sung by young brides homesick for their mothers. She is accompanied on the jaw harp by Manchu singer Song Xidong. Other components of the In Search of Manchuria project can be found at https://vimeo.com/45659487, https://vimeo.com/46063617, and https://vimeo.com/46038383. http://www.rowenali.com/in-search-of-manchuria.html

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
