Tintal - this is the really important thing to learn how to play because this is the basic time cycle in which we play all the compositions in this video. This is the famous 16 beat time cycle which has a clap on the first beat sam and a clap on the fifth beat, the second clap; a wave on the 9th beat (khali) and a final third clap on the thirteenth beat. Put quite simply what is shown here is the theka of tintal- the simple individual strokes of tintal which you need to master before adding decoration. There are also other time cycles for instance ones in 7, 10 and 12 all of which tabla players need to learn at some time. For more information please email…. Ari Layakari demonstration - Exclusive to this video is our technique in demonstrating Ari Layakari. Here we are doing what we did in the mini video called "Ari Layakari - an introduction to cross rhythms" but we are now using the original kayada without adding those two extra strokes. On the whole this is more difficult to do but it is really good practice to try. Please enjoy and join in with our counting over the saying and playing of the tabla bols. In this mini video we have a new Kayada - Kayada no 4  and this composition uses the rela type phrases previously taught. The paltas for this kayada are interesting because they use the Dha Tira Kita phrase which is a 3 beat phrase and so crosses over the main beat. These can be arranged in different ways to create variety. Watch and listen and play along - this section is simply a play along session. Try it. Having trouble? Then please email me...
