                  • Bertrand Cadart: Motorcyles, Movie Star, Mayor

                    04:26

                    from Damien Larkins Added 190 0 0

Since 2007, Bertrand Catard has been the mayor of Glamorgan Spring Bay council on Tasmania's east coast. An eccentric and compelling character, he's known in his home town of Bicheno for his love of motorcycles, his British bulldog 'CB', his wild facial hair, passion, drive and thick, distinctive accent - which after decades in Australia he steadfastly refuses to change. Betrand is living proof that often newcomers to an area, no matter where they're from, or what their idiosyncrasies, can have a significant and lasting positive effect on a community. --------------------------------------------------------------- Considering that the position is about everyday teaching people to make effective content, I wanted to use widely accessible tools. The reason for this, I went deliberately 'low-tech' with my equipment. - a Fuji J40 digital camera, which I bought specifically for this project, for $99 at KMart. - a $50 bottom-of-the-line Velbon CX440 tripod from a camera store - NCH video and audio editing software, which is available free to download on the internet. - a four year old laptop, running Windows Vista - a Sony MZ-N710 mini-disc recorder, released in 2003 (one of which is currently for sale on eBay from a South Australian seller for $51) As it has been some time since I have done a non-news video story, I decided to do a new one. After speaking with Gabrielle at ABC Open on Tuesday, it occurred to me it was also the best way to prove I have the neccessary skills and am able to create content to tight deadlines. I also deliberately kept myself out of the storytelling, in keeping with the idea that I'll be teaching others to tell their stories on ABC Open. Bertrand was more than willing to help, after I rang him during the week, ran him through the story and told him why I was doing it. At about five am on Saturday, I braved fog and black ice, risking life and limb, to make the two hour drive to Bicheno from Hobart. I spent the morning with Bertrand, recorded the interview, filmed some sequences at his house, then leap-frogged with him to Swansea, so I could get some riding shots, and see him talking to the community.
