This summer Szu-ting Yi and I led trekking trips in Western China. No matter how well prepared we are, there are often factors that are out of our control. This year we faced challenging weather conditions and access issues during out treks. However, when an experience in life is straightforward or easy it is often soon forgotten. I believe it is those difficult moments, like hiking in a rainstorm, that allows us to really appreciate the sunshine breaking through the clouds. The unpredictable nature of traveling to remote regions is often full of mental and physical challenges. Some people call this Type 2 fun (not always fun in the moment, but in hindsight a worthy experience). However, the effects of these unique and eye opening experiences stay with us long after the trip has ended. The author T.S. Elliot captured this the essence of this idea when he wrote, “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”
