“In wildness is the preservation of the world” declared Henry David Thoreau. It is not in the order of cities or suburbia. Real life comes from contact with the wildness of frontier. Our state of Vermont, once 80% farmland, now 80% forest, is frontier again. The coyote has come to these woods from the west. The Catamount now stalks through our ranges like a whisper. And in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, the howls are heavier, longer, and there is rumor of wolves. Wildness lies thick here. Here in this state, Thoreau would undoubtedly agree, is the preservation of the world. Here, hardly any would agree, is the preservation of skateboarding. To skateboard in such a place is to be at the ragged fringe of a culture, where skate spots and even paved places are rare. But fringes and borders are where things are wildest. The “edge effect” as it’s called by ecologists, is the phenomena of increased species population and biodiversity at the border between two ecosystems. Life thrives at the border. Things meet, comingle, and evolve there. In Vermont we are at a border. Human and nonhuman worlds meet here and the human takes on the wildness around it, becoming something new, becoming something more. As the woods grow deeper and the howls thicken, a new barbaric boarding is being born in this place.

Missouri. Stomping grounds of such literary rapscallions as Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. While passing through the Twain state we came across the likes of the wild Rick Rossi. This kid is a source of stoke and he always brings the rad out in those around him. Thanks for the good times Rick!

Fall in New England for many means leaf peeping. Leaf peeping: v. The act of driving north to Vermont from New York or New Jersey in the autumn in a sport utility vehicle with an I heart Vermont bumper sticker to gaze at picturesque foliage and go outlet shopping. For many New England kids though, the turning color of the foliage means work. It’s the season when the old man sends you out to do a little bit of raking. Well, a ton of raking sometimes. When we were younger, this work had its benefits though. When you were finished, you always had a pile of feather-light crunchiness in which to jump and perfect the moves of your wildest imaginings. We used to even put a bike ramp up to freshly raked piles. But leaves and skateboarding? Many skaters avoid the sidewalk patches and piles as a hazard. They can be damp and slippery underneath, holding rainwater left over from showers that happened days ago. Loss of control is likely. But you know what, loss of control feels good sometimes. It feels liberating, like that midair moment before you cannonball into a pile of leaves that took an hour long of raking.

Well, after some rowdy skate sessions on the north shore, the Green Mountain Boys pushed on to NYC where they were hosted by the eminent Ian Durkin and accompanied on a city skatin' safari by the radical Jackson Rourke. NYC is just fun. And coffee makes it more so.

Here we go. First leg of the trip. Had to stop at a few spots even before making it out of Vermont. And then, once out of the state, the crew actually went southeast to the north shore of Boston for some final sessions with the Glenney gang and Steve, who we had to leave behind (he had too much homework). Such good sessions though. Dave got a little suicidal at the Salem slides, Steve became possessed by the spirit of Jason Adams, and young Ivan Glenney ripped with true skate spontaneity.
