Inside Sound was a special event, jointly curated by Sound and Music’s ‘Embedded’ composer-in-residence Nathaniel Mann and ethnomusicologist Dr. Noel Lobley. ‘Inside Sound’ transformed the Museum into a listening gallery using surround speakers to engulfed the space in the sounds of a Central African rainforest. Pre-programmed iPads provided interactive portals into the museum's sound and image archives. Renowned musician David Rothenberg used his array of wind instruments to provide a roaming response to this soundscape. Inside Sound was a collaboration between OCM and the Pitt Rivers Museum. It took place on 22 November, 2013 and nearly 2200 people visited the museum to experience the event. nathanielmann.co.uk davidrothenberg.wordpress.com www.ocmevents.org www.prm.ox.ac.uk pittriversmann.blogspot.co.uk

Expansive Field closing performance by David Rothenberg in Sciulli's sound activated Oscilloscope projection at South Fork Natural History Museum, 25 May 2011. The video is poor quality, shot with an iphone, but the playing is amazing. The Expansive Field Project included large scale projection installations, interactive sound/light performances, invited guest artist-performers, workshops, and educational outreach. Three performers were invited to publicly interact with my installations: Composer-vocalist Cecilie Hafstad Richards (20 April 2013 Opening Event), Visual/Movement artist Jaanika Peerna, and Philosopher-composer-author David Rothenberg (25 May 2013 Closing Event). David Rothenberg, a professor of philosophy and music at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, likes to make music in nature...with nature. With clarinet, saxophone or electronic synthesizer, he has accompanied choruses of bellowing whales, chirping katydids and drumming mosquitoes. In this short documentary, he serenades with the species that started it all: Magicicada septindecim--the 17-year periodical cicadas.
