2013 Nike SbA Am Series The Finals – Skatepark of Melbourne Saturday 30th of March Video: Shane Fowler + Louie Dodd Song: 'Love' Performed by HAMJAM (hamjam.bandcamp.com) After a summer of seven incredible qualifiers in six states and one territory we were all excited to see the level at The Finals and it surpassed all expectations. March 30th saw over forty talented skateboard units hone in on Melbourne and spend a couple of days interpreting the obstacles at the Skatepark of Melbourne. There were a few course tweaks since The Finals last year. The micro-wheelchair ramp from last year was replaced with a more realistic version, which was designed and built for the Shocklands contest. The snowplough was also added which is a steep wallie hip. The spined area was simplified to just be a pump bump. This allowed more space, faster speed and greater flow throughout the whole joint. In order to get a good view of the entire course the SbA judging and MC area was assembled on a scaffold high above the course. The judges for the day were new SbA head judge Jim Dandy, OG Melbourne street guru Ben Harriss, the heavy-hitting Kurt Winter and last year's Open Am Champ Mr. Sam Tran aka ‘Gunti’ aka ‘Thug Angel’. Is Thug Angel not one of the best nicknames of all time? Cuzza and Fludey took to the mics as the psyched up MC duo. Considering the talent up in that scaff we sure were in good hands. Of course none of this would have happened without the dedication of the rest of the SbA team and the Logistics Manager Steve Murphy. Steve has spent the whole of the series without a home in the name of the next gen. He has literally been working towards this final for months and except for one moment where I saw him crumble and take a relaxation flight whilst strapped to a giant foam amoeba, he was going one hundred miles per hour all weekend, sometimes dealing with ten trouble shooting missions at one time. Also a big thanks to sponsors: Nike, the Australian Sports Commission and the Victorian Government. Without their financial backing of the Series it wouldn’t have happened. Just minutes into the practice session and a cab heelflip was seen getting spun out of the lip of the small quarter pipe by Open competitor Steve Adam. Was this a sign of what luda-stunts were to come? From the moment the first couple of people started skating to well after the comp had wound up, there were wild moves going down all over the shop. Some of the guys had grown a foot since last year and all of their trick bags had grown exponentially. I heard that one of the guys in the Junior final (Zack Lycos) had only been skating for two years! Who knows how good he will be next year? The overall progression of Australia’s next gen points in one direction: to even more world–class international names coming from our shores in the years to come. 2013 Nike SbA Am Series Qualifiers Stop #4 – Roxburgh Skatepark Saturday 2nd of January Words: Morgan Campbell Photos: Matty Hooker Video: Shane Fowler + Phil Watt For the past couple of years the Victorian Qualifier for the SbA Am Series has been held at the Clifton Hill Skatepark. For those who are not familiar with Clifton Hill: check the clip from last year. It not only includes furious shredding by all the peeps in the comp but there is a much-cherished guest appearance by none other than Lewis Marnell (RIP). As you will see Clifton Hill is about as ‘street’ as a skatepark gets. To put it mildly: it is a block city, completely devoid of transitions and banks. 2013 Nike SbA Am Series Qualifiers Stop #4 – Roxburgh Skatepark Saturday 2nd of January Words: Morgan Campbell Photos: Matty Hooker Video: Shane Fowler + Phil Watt (continued: sba.org.au/Blog/2013-nike-sba-am-series-vic-qualifier-results )

After two months of qualifiers that took us from coast to coast through six states and one territory The 2012 Nike SbA Am Series climaxed at the Skatepark of Melbourne this past Saturday March the 31st. Twenty-two Juniors and twenty-three Opens took to the shapes of SPoM with no hesitation and laid it down giving us a vivid indication of the incredible local level of today’s (and tomorrow’s) skateboarding. As you will see in the footage and photos: the park houses many obstacles catering for all types of skaters, and every single one of them copped a thrashin’. There are Euro gaps, hubbas of all sizes, spines, whoopdees, vert quarters (with massive drops off the back), bank to walls, square rails, round rails, hips, bank to blocks, out ledges, manual pads, L-blocks, bumps to ledges and China banks. There were also a couple of new additions: a smallish wheelchair ramp and a new pyramid / fun box contraption. The whole course had just been painted in a fresh black n white and once it was visually garnished for the event looked, it better than ever. During set up for the comp these two dogs were going absolutely ballistic. They were not a part of our wolf pack either. One was a three legged mini Jack Russell, the other was a pointer / cocker spaniel crossed with a springbok. Cuzz was on the blower making sure that the Clifton Hill plaza was free of debris. The frequency that it was omitting sent the two dogs nuts, they lost their owner who was perpetually yelling out their names: “Matty”… “Hooker”… “Matty”. Wait isn’t that the name of our filmer? Matty Hooker? Yep: weird! The springbok dog was sprinting the length of the skate park desperately looking for its owner, and the three-legged guy was doing his best to run. Eventually Cuzz stopped making a racket and they dogs were reunited with their owner. The last we saw of the springbok dog was the most epic’ly popped dog shifty off into the bush. A short while later contestants and fans began rocking up for the Victorian qualifier of the 2012 Nike SbA Am Series. The guest judges were Magistrate Mike Martin and Judge Jeremy Corea. The guest MC was Anthony Mapstone who also led the charge with the Fast Times BBQ action. Nick Boserio was guest chef and Lewis Marnell took care of the switch ledge department. Aside from a little wind towards the end of the session the sun shone and conditions were perfectly shred-worthy. continued here: http://skateboardingaustralia.org.au/2012-SBA-Am-Series/nike-sba-2012-am-series-victorian-qualifier
