Nautilus is an interactive video projection. On the left of the screen, a live webcam feed displays people in front of the work, their coloured clothing triggering a cascade of pixels across the middle section. These pixels form sand piles which build up over the duration of the show to form geological-like strata. Observing all this on the right is the Nautilus itself; a ‘living fossil’ constructed from photographs of the artists’ bodies. The piece provides a contemplative reflection of activity within Limbo, and relates various time scales from real-time to algorithmic time to the deep time of evolutionary history.

"Consider the Earth's history as the old measure of the English yard, the distance from the King's nose to the tip of his outstretched hand. One stroke of a nail file on his middle finger erases human history." -John McPhee

Deep Time is the system the Mayan's created to represent the bigger cycles of the universe. While our scale begins with a single year, to a decade, to a century and millennium, their scale grows from 1 year (Tun), to 20 years (Katun), to 400 years (Baqtun), to approximately 5125 years. To find out why they chose to build their calendar system into the deep time of the universe you'll have to see this clip.
