      • Keeping Pace with Pacemakers

The implantable pacemaker. For decades now, it has helped keep our tickers ticking. “The pacemakers we currently use are called demand pacemakers which means that the device is so smart that it is watching your own pulse or heart beat and if the heart stops or slows down, the pacemaker takes over right away and the patient does not notice any difference,” says Dr. Subhash Kshetrapal, an interventional cardiologist with Lee Memorial Health System. For use in people with a slow heart beat, the pacemaker uses low-energy electrical pulses to overcome faulty signaling. The pacemaker is now part of a defibrillator. “All the defibrillators have a built-in pacemaker. But they’re mainly used if the heart goes rapid at 200 beats per minute and the patient is going to collapse or pass out,” says Dr. Kshetrapal. “The defibrillator gives a shock and the pacemaker is a backup.” Keeping pace with pacemakers. Currently, devices consist of a battery, generator and wires or leads that connect to the heart. The latest technology now in testing in the U.S. is a wireless device. “Recently pacemakers were introduced that are wireless. There will not be a need of a wire and these are implanted, through the groin and placed inside the ventricle on the right side.” Another step forward is the MRI-friendly pacemaker; one that is approved for diagnostic testing. Making the device a safe choice for more people. “Pacemakers have been around for more than 50 years and they have made a major change in the quality of life,” Dr. Kshetrapal says. A time-tested device - standing the test of time. • Project Lilith; A chance meeting with death - A Moving Painting by Marcus Bowler

Story Summary; 'What happens when the body is in a coma? The story of Lilith takes place in two planes of existence. Real life and inside the mind of patient Lilith. A girl who was gunshot to the point of death. Physically her body, is in A+E Wing7, but its interesting to know her mind is somewhere inside the depths of her subconscious. With the help of her spirit guide and companion conscious, she must find a way out of her broken body, and into the life of the real world, while avoiding death; a shadow manifestation that wants Lilith’s life to add to his death toll, as he quests to destruct Lilith from the inside out.' As part of my portfolio development, Anglia Ruskin wanted me to produce a body of animated work that contributes to my animation showreel. For the past three weeks, I've been busy developing this painting into a finished rendered moving illustration. {Ive never animated a painting quite like this size or caliber before. It took an entire day to render this 2GB beast.} This is a response to the Crystal Cave animated test I did four months ago. https://vimeo.com/102945616 Originally, my plan was to make an animated trailer, that would be focusing around my own written storyline. I produced concept art, an animatic, and some written material and character biography's, but the project was seen as too big by week three for one person to undertake. So instead i wanted a series of slow moving illustrations, which again became cut down to one scene. When i have time, i will upload my short animatic for the first opening scenes of the trailer, but project Lilith looks to be something that might have to be developed overtime as a long-term investment, unless i decide one day I want to make something from it. It won't be something that i can put forward for my final project. My imagination is too big for this to be a final project. So I'm aiming for something simple instead next semester. Possibly hand-drawn frame by frame, in TV paint. For now though, it was fun. and finished. So I am happy with that. Marcus Bowler.
