Located near Carlsbad, New Mexico this Department of Energy (DOE) experimental nuclear waste dump is attempting to store leftover radioactive plutonium and americium from the US weapons program. On February 14, 2014 there was a nuclear safety failure at the site and the Department of Energy is not being honest about it. In this film Fairewinds Energy Education's Arnie Gundersen pieces together what happened and points out Fairewinds' major concerns about the facility, the accident and the lack of transparency at the DOE.

Hampton University student Jordan Smith explains the design of the windows in the "Unit 6" -- a net-zero solar house that was featured in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011. Jordan was the lead architect for Team Tidewater Virginia, which consisted of students from Old Dominion University and Hampton University. The Solar Decathlon is a biennial competition sponsored by the DOE in which 20 university teams from around the world design and build a net-zero solar house. The houses are judged in 10 categories, including architecture, engineering and affordability.

At Stanford University, students have come together to build a house to compete in the Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon competition, in which 20 universities compete to build the most sustainable solar powered home. The Stanford Solar Decathlon Interaction Design Team is working to rethink and recreate the in house appliances we have accepted as unchanging cultural artifacts, while adding a few of our own as well. This week we focused on the PV Artwork, an art piece in the home that elegantly displays your solar output and consumption.

As gas prices skyrocket and electric vehicles (EV) become more affordable, the number of electric cars on the road is rapidly increasing. After 22 months on the market there were already 1,610 registered EVs in Oregon—hybrids sold 1,247 in that same period. Despite the parallel increase in demand for electric charging stations, the equivalent of a gas station, they remain rare, limiting the distance EVs can travel.
